Today sees one of the oldest clubs in the WAAFL play their last game. Formed in 1923, Maddington play their last game before merging wtih Piara Waters next season, bringing to an end a 94 year history.
It took Maddington 23 years to win their first flag in 1946. 2 more followed in 1952 and 53, and another in 59 in the South Suburban FA. In the South Surburban Murray FL, they won premierhships in 1966 and 71, followed by a hat trick of flags from 1974 to 76. They were coached by Dennis Cometti during this time . Another Grand Final appearance in 1977 resulted in a 104 point loss to Gosnells and Cometti's last game as coach of the club.
It took Maddington 27 years to win their next league flag. COached by former perth player Darren Rigby they won the Sunday FL 2003 premiership. Anther flag resulted in 2007 when the coach was Wayne Blackwell.

While I feel the sentiment for some is sadness I don't think we should write this off as a terrible move. I by no means support either club but am someone who thinks a merger can create something good. Piara have been solid and I think have a thirds. Maddington have been up and down over the last 5-7 years but have some good people around.. good luck to the new merged club moving forward. As a local footy fan I only feel optimistic for you

Well said Tiger.
I am of the same opinion, it is better to merge and keep the players and wonderful supporters around the clubs and involved in the game than to die a slow and painful death.
That is easy to say, as I am not involved in either club and no have emotional stake in them. I know I would be resistant to the move if it was to happen to my club. However if it meant staying alive instead of folding and losing a place to catch up with great mates, then I would fully support it.
After all that is in what has happened here, come January next year the Maddington and Piara boys will all have made more great mates.

I wish them all the best, just not when they play us.

Sad to see another club with a very long history struggle so much to have to merge as I played a lot of footy against them (and Kelmscott) over the years....and yet I constantly hear that football is currently booming!?

I played for the Bulls in 17's and again in 1994, got stretchered off v Wanneroo at Kingsway and that was the last game I playe. Sad to see a club with a fine history go this way! And the AFL reckon the game is flying
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

The whole fabric of football from under the AFL has been let down, and no way Footy is booming, just check how many Junior teams in the Perth District compared to Soccer and you know it is in big trouble, but Gil and all his wanker mates could not care less, too busy with after hour curriculums of sins, or patting each other on the back.

I find it amazing that a club like Kelmscott that had it's own Licensed Sporting Club, is as good as gone, just mind boggling, and now Maddo.

What is the Merged team to be called and where will they be playing, and last question where the f*** is Piara Waters ?

I'd be interested in finding out how many suburban and country teams have folded in the last 10 years. Apart from Gosnells and Thornlie the few remaining Sunday footy clubs ate struggling. Maddington has merged, whats happening at Kelmscott is anyone's guess and Armadale drop down to D1 next year with only 1 win this year and 2 last year
Piara Waters used to be known as Southern River.

Swan4life Armadale can't go to D grade as it clubs 3rd & 4th teams. Kingsway are ex Sunday and look to be pushing to A grade. I wouldn't be surprised if Kelmscott and Armadale merged. Have heard it would be a done deal if they get rid of the money bags tool running Kelmscott. More teams will merge over the next few years as the sponsorship dollar dries up

I fully agree it is sad to see a club like Maddington fold. Recent administrators must be held to account though and not allowed to hold key positions at the resulting club.

Lot of chatter over the years regarding Maddington & kelmscott, always involves $$. Compare it to an ex Sunday club like kingsway who have a huge focus on colts & community and also share a very close proximity to other clubs.
