From the WAAFL website:

"The annual WAAFL AGM was held on Wednesday 17 March 2016 at the East Perth Club Rooms. Three nominees put their hand up for the top job with long running board members Milton Sanders and John Davies up against new comer Sam Birmingham.

After the votes were counted it was announced that Sam Birmingham would become the new president of the WA Amateur Football League."

Let's hope the long overdue change allows the WAAFL to outline and implement a modern, forward-thinking, 21st century vision to ensure the growth and prosperity of the Amateur competition.

Having to put up with Tossers like you, I am surprised John Davies did the job for 20 Years, it just shows his dedication to this voluntary position, Great job John and Milton without your calibre of people on the board the Amateur comp would not be where it is today, a very strong comp with a high participation rate. My hat is off to you Knowing the time and effort put in by you both over the journey. Don't worry about the nay sayers like south4eva, he is happy to criticise, but would probably not put his hand up to have a crack

I didn't think I was having a crack, even if you think it was, it wasn't personal like yours TM.

But whilst I've got the floor it might be worth pointing out:

- participation rates have actually been falling since 2013;
- the Board implemented the ill-fated Statutory Declaration process which was deemed not legally enforceable (which is why no action has been taken);
- the Board was found wanting in relation to racial vilification by Club members and all-in brawls between Clubs last year;
- the Board's reluctance over many years to acknowledge that the payment of players was a real issue in the WAAFL; and
- the Presidents of the Amateur Clubs overwhelmingly voted to change the President and not endorse a long term Board Member.

What you’ll see now is changes to the amateur status of the waafl.
It will go along the lines of what SA and Vic have had for years.
The shamateur tag should have gone in 1984 as it did in the Olympics so we will see now how the new model will change the dynamics of the comp in the years to come.

The participation rates have nothing to do with the board, it’s about demographics, being:
The impact of the marketing of the AFL thru the Eagles and Dockers has helped bring 3 generations into the fold and that’s now tapered off.
That birth rates reflect the economic tide which went low from the labor era, 20 years ago.
Not all family immigration to WA has come from places with an AFL background.
The increase in participation rates of Masters and Women’s football.
And unfortunately, the effect of the drug culture.

Some pretty harsh and unwarranted comments regarding john and Milton. Both have volunteered 20 years of their lives to the waafl.
Nothing but utter respect for them both.

My personal opinion is that there non re election is a result of the mockery the comp was made this year on various fronts. Make no mistake, this is a knee jerk reaction to various incidents and more a warning shot to the management of the waafl. Unfortunately for John and Milton they have copped it.

Stronger direction to the employed management of the waafl is needed, pretty sure they will get it now.

South4eva has obviously made a huge contribution to WA footy...maybe he can post his CV for comparison to both Milton and Johns nearly 60 years of service?

Agree with Tug that both Milton and John not being re-appointed was a statement by the clubs that they are unhappy with how the Board and Administration have handled a number of issues over the past few seasons. Be a few other nervous Board members and I wouldn't be surprised to see one or two step aside before their term ends.

Some big decisions ahead of the new Board including the future financial stability of clubs and the competition, the merit of a Player Points System, drop off of players transitioning from Juniors into the WAAFL and integrity of the competition.
