Peel boss questions character of players

Peel players have been accused of revealing a "lack of character" by walking out of the club rather than staying to help it overcome one of the toughest periods in its barren 17-year history.

As president John Ditchburn said Peel were happy to see the last of a group of players who had abandoned the Thunder over the loss of opportunities under the AFL partnership with Fremantle, he predicted last week's embarrassment would not be repeated.

Peel were thrashed by East Perth on Saturday after the reserves kicked only two behinds and were forced to play 40-year-old football manager Brad Bootsma to make up their numbers.

Peel's plight was exposed by a host of injuries to Thunder and Fremantle players that exacerbated the departure this year of 13 disgruntled individuals who had played nearly 600 senior matches between them.

"When guys get dropped to the ressies it shows a lack of character on their behalf to not hang around," Ditchburn said. "But if they don't want to be at the club there's no point having them there.

"It was a double whammy on Saturday and a dark day for the club.

"With our four or five injuries and the same at Fremantle, as well as the players who have left the club, we struggled."

Ditchburn said Peel would be more competitive against West Perth this week, predicting that up to five Dockers could return.

But more importantly this -

The WA Football Commission is considering further aid to Peel, though the club has received substantial assistance in the past, including a $350,000 loan that is still outstanding.

New WAFC football general manager Steve Hargrave, who will take over some of the responsibilities of outgoing director Grant Dorrington, acknowledged concerns over Peel's performance but was confident about the club's future.

Good guess but as I said nothing to do with the alignment and more to do with demands from the coach.

Hardly a surprise though, most of the players that have left this year moved to Peel from another team after their other team kicked them out for not being professional. Sheppard has come in and tried to turn the Peel playing group into a professional squad and the players have gone bush where they can get away with being lazy.

Not too much to expect senior players to go to rehab on a Sunday morning on time and sober is it?

the peel soap opera just keeps going on. and still a dead weight decision that has completely hindered any progress the wafl could have had since 1997.

if the millions pumped into this peel club over the past 16 years had have been used to support the 8 quality clubs, we could have been looking at the most prominent state league in the country. with veryone playing each other 3 times over 21 rounds.

and the wafc are looking at more funding for them? i would laugh if i wasnt so damn angry

dockers should align with south or east and the commission must end peel. we could tell them to just swallow their pride, but i dont think they have any. its all very very sad what they have done to the wafl. bad decisions one after the other and continuing every year.

Peel being granted a license is the worst decision in the history of the WAFL, even worse than the alignment and the Westar slogan. WAFC have a great record dont they!

do you think gd did a good job anchor?
Victorians still laugh at West Aussies because of the way we bailed out the vfl and then allowed it to be called it the AFL!

Disingenuous in the extreme a/man. We have offered many areas where we think Dorrington has failed with respect to the WAFC competition. You have offered a counter view without providing any evidence to support that view. Over to you.
