it depends on the sport, the event, the era and the degree of dopping

Nice work GTR.
With new facilities like Perth Stadium, Perth Arena, HBF Stadium, Speedome, Champion Lakes Rowing Centre etc we wouldn’t have to build too much by way of new stadia And is at a far better standard than that on offer in 1962.

Tv ratings to India and Africa .UK would be massive .No tourism campaign could sell Perth and Wa like the Common Games.BH beach volleyball in Broome. Some sport in Margaret River.

Cottesloe & Scarborough Beach wouldn’t be bad locations either mate for the beach volleyball nor Busselton come to think of it.
Not sure if Yachting is in the Comm Games but having a regatta on the Swan around Perth City wouldn’t be a bad backdrop either.

Which ever way it goes, I'm sure the state government will be looking at the idea closely. The states finances are in a terrible mess as far as I know. Politicians keep banging on about tourism being our great saviour, this would be an ideal platform for promotion. One thing bothers me and that's the very high cost of living in WA that might scare a few people away. I'm sure if the state government can work out a way to run a profit, the games will happen.

WAG most of the facilities we need are already here.Athletes could stay at Crown down the road from Optus Stadium. Marathon from Freo and finishing in Optus.

Yep , that's them, remember most of those venues in their prime.

Perry Lakes and Beatty Park were purpose built for the games.

I remember the stands and facilities for the rowing on Canning River remained there into the 70s.

Perth gained a lot from those games, the parkland around Perry lakes parks and roads were all upgraded but the City of Perth got a heap of additional funding in the lead up from the Federal Gov and State Gov for spending on sport facilities one of the beneficiaries was WAFL with three grounds Lathlain, Perth Oval and Leederville all getting new modern stands still in use today.

You would definitely have the beach volleyball at Cott or Scabs ( if it was included as a sport ) Broome is miles away and would be a logistical stuff up having one sport so far away.

Sailing could be included and would be ideal on Perth water, Australia, UK, NZ, are all massive sailing nations.

Mosman Park Bowling Club hosted the world championships a few years back and is an amazing venue with views.

Rowing on the river again would be great,

Hockey is ready to go at Bentley.

In door sports would be a breeze, Perth Arena, Boxing/Gymnastics, Challenge Stadium, Netball, Perth Convention Centre ,Weightlifting, Perth Concert Hall, as a back up.

Why not include a form of 20/20 cricket. Use the WACA.

ArkRoyal wrote: gtr: good one -- the medal count is a bit skewed because South Africa would have been banned -- a great effort by NZ too, as they would not have had many more than 2 million people at the time.

South Africa did not participate as they had withdrawn from the Comm in 1961 , nor did India due to the border dispute with Pakistan.

Baz I'm pretty sure Malaysia in the late 90's had ,50 over cricket.South Africa beat Aust for the Gold. But T20 would be better with the Waca hosting games.Rugby 7' at Perth Oval..
Was looking at the Lathlain Grand Stand last Sat.Its identical to East and West Perth's one.

Yep KL, had cricket and rugby 7s I think,,,

a 20/20 tournament would be great, England, Scotland, Wales, and NI, Canada, Aus, NZ, Singapore South Africa, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Kenya, would all have teams off the top of my head, given cricket is basically limited to the commonwealth, surprised its not an automatic inclusion.

Yep all three of those stands are built to a standard design, built late 50's in the build up to the Empire Games in 62 by City of Perth which covered all those suburbs back then.

WACA ideal for it, and rugby 7s at Perth Oval perfect.

Originally if you remember they all had the traditional City of Perth Coat of Arms on them.

In fact I think Leederville Oval was used as a warm up track from Athletes.
