Archie Duda: It was a real pity that Larwood never got to three figures that day, I am certain the crowd would have clapped even louder had he got the two extra runs. I remember my grandad saying that the English players were very popular in the past. He mentioned that the cricket fraternity, during Hobb's last tour, got togerher to buy him a present which was a very nice gesture.

I forgot to comment more on the 1979-80 season:

your right AD, it had:

the Higss incident
the Snedden catch
the under-arm
Rod's Marsh's bat breaking
the Gavaskar walk-off -- he got further then Ray's team in 1970

I had a look at the unde-arm incident again on y-tube. It was a strange over: Sir Richard Hadlee hit the first ball for four, second ball he was given out by a dody leg before decision where the ball pitched outside leg. Edgar was at the other end 100 not out, but strangely, he never faced a single ball in the over. Smith and then Mckeknie faced the rest of the over.

The actual incident was a disgrace, well narratted by Benaud, and should have really cost Chappell the captaincy. What do you theink?

Those incidents were all in the 1980/81 season AR.
In 1979/80 there was the D.K aluminium bat incident at the WACA along with 2 scores of 99 in the same game.

BH thanks mate you are bang on as usual. 79-80 also saw two of the best catches ever -- Botham and Randall -- and that was the season Brealey put everyone back on the boundary during a one day game. Good old days they were.

Anch: I agree. Greg Chappell was a good player but he had no more right to the captancy than Rod Marsh did in 1975. He knew it too, I think. The sad thing was, that, Marsh, targetted Hughes for his wrath rather than Gregory Stephen.

TT: Why? He was always the least of the great commentators behind Benaud, Lawry and Grieg. Did you like him when he asked that question of Hughes at the toss? The one where he asked about Bob Holland being in the team after Hughes had said no spinner was of test standard? You know how Hughes should have responded to that TT? In this way. 'I stand by my comments on Australian spinners. You should ask your little brother about selections as he is on the panel me.

That would put chappell back in his place, but it would also have cost him his job. But, as you would remember TT, that was the point of the whole question.

First of all Arkroyal I am not TT I am Tiger of old.
And I ldisagree with your rankings of channel nine commentators but there is no argument there that is a case of personal opinion.
My high opinion of Ian Chappell Admiditelly comes from my late old man who always said he was the best and toughest Aussie skipper he ever saw so I am biased. I am too young to offer An opinion on his era of captaincy but I tell you what, on the rare chance that I get to watch the tv now days i am absolutely stoked if Chapelli is commentating

Chappelli was also a very good baseballer from SA, in the days when cricket and baseball were in opposite seasons.

He was good enough to have caught for the Oz baseball team, but was (allegedly) warned off by Sir Donald B.

I entertained IC a couple of times in the Presidents Lounge at Parry Field during the late 80s - he would always come to watch the old Claxton Shield/ABL games when he was in Perth for the cricket.

I can say with certainty that he was never backward in coming forward with his opinions - particularly about (cricket) commentators, rather than players.

Anch: he is always bitching about the establishment in Australia and England; but he forgets, all too easily for my liking, that he went to 'Prince Alfred College', was the grand son of Australia's vice-captain, and, of xourse, was captain of the national side himself. Me heart bleeds with the extent to which I M Chappell has been so down trodden in his cricket life.

In regards Hughes, hes was nothing more than a 'bully'.
