I noticed, slighly disconcerted, that Lord Malcolm has wanderred back in to the country in his own time, giving everybody a history lesson on Hungary. For the record, it is true that the Environment Minister's mum would have had her citizenship stripped by the Arrow Heads and the Germans; but this is far from being the issue, as it is 2017 and Hungary is a free republic. The question is: is the Mum entitlled to Hungarian citizenship today? If the answer is yes, then the government has a problem.

That was just for Lord Malcolm's benefit.

That being one of too many questions that needs answering! Old malcolm is copping flak from everywhere and he simply wants the issue to go away. Going to be interesting following.

Tough news for those who want a "gotcha' moment. Considering the circumstances of his mother being a survivor of the greatest act of genocide the world has seen and being a stateless person when she came to Australia it is disgraceful that Josh has been dragged thru the mud. This is what politics has come to in the 21st Century.
The Hungarians have confirmed that Josh Frydenberg is not and never has been a citizen of Hungary.
Go get a life you lot.

smoke: no one is dragging him through the mud any more than any of the other politicians involved. Plenty of people died in the Second World War smoke, includding, Australians in the 2nd AIF, defendding Palestine itself in 1942.

What do you suggest Smoke? Special treatment for the Minister?

It was a dirty fishing expedition. The man already held documentary proof that he was not and never has been a citizen of Hungary.
It is all about common decency and respect for others.

smoke: The problem is that because of the High Cour decision, you don't have to have taken out citizenship of a country. Barnaby joyce has never been a NZ, but he has had to resign his seat.

In short, the High Court's decsion was a harsh one indeed.

AR, that was because Barnaby was automatically an hereditary NZ citizen even though he wasn't born there. That is how it works in NZ, England, Italy etc.
Frydenberg born in Australia of a woman who came to Australia as a stateless person.as a survivor of the Nazi holocaust. The difference was that Frydenberg already had documentation that he never was a citizen of Hungary.
There is no comparison between these two.

smoke-- from what I understand of Hungarian law it is bestowed by descent, which is why people have asked questions. As I said before, the Hungarian Jews had their citizenship restorred and were paid compansation by the Hungarian government for the crimes of the Arrow Heads. If it went to the High Court, it would be an interestting case, knowing that the judges have been making some eye-catching rulings.

Life would have been a lot easier if the High Court had rulled that on had to 'actively apply for citizenship of another country'. In addition, the High Court should rule that, Australians should not have to continely comply with the rule changes of other countries.

Interesting that as soon as the idea of a complete review of all sitting parliamentarians citizenship status was proposed, the first one to take a quick step back from the idea was Plibasek, maybe she's now wondering how many on her side of politics this rediculous affair make catch up with? The public are sooo over it and any situation where either side of the floor try and take a political advantage or challenge any of the laws passed by this government will see them punished by the electorate, firstly up in QLD.

ss: an interestting post. What I would like to see Lord Malcolm do is to stop asking for 'dobbers'. In general, Australians dislike 'dobbers', and the fact that he has suggestted that people report members to the High Court demonstrates, yet again, how out of touch he is with public opinion.
