Yeh sure thing mate I was allowed to catch the train with a mate during 1983 onwards as a 10yr old and my uncle used to take me to Bassendean in the early 80's when he went along but no live GF action until 85 which was still a great spectacle even though SD went out in the Prelim. My mums friend was mad EF and took me and we had to camp near the gates from 5am to get near the fence in the pocket next to the old members stand
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

1973 GF, with Leon O'Dwyer's arrogance in wearing a beanie as he ran on a "highlight".

Numerous Sunday mornings at the oval during the 60's, as my grand father (a Subi and WANFL member) got pissed in the Members Stand, and then drove us home - this was well before Sunday sessions or pub openings in the wider community.

I would spend my time exploring the old wooden stand, including climbing up to the turret where they stored the flags for the flagpoles there, kicking a way oversized (for me) footy that I would get from Johnny Webster, the Subi property guy who was cleaning boots and cleaning jumpers etc.

I've probaly kicked nearly as many goals there as Okker.

Speaking of which, seeing Okker threading goals from the boundary pocket in front of the wooden stand - a tight pocket, probably 50 metres, and often into a stiff sea breeze ....... well before the 3 tier stand. It was known as Okker's pocket for good reason. We (me and the grandies) sat there for a few seasons, before they became WANFL members, and I was then part of the gentry.

The 1973 Claxton Shield, held in blistering January heat. WA, Victoria and SA were tied on points at the end of the preliminary games, and the Vics had to beat SA in a 12 innings game in the morning, to then go on a beat a very strong WA team for the Shield in the arvo. Home plate was situated between the old wooden and Members stands, with the temporary stand (who remembers that?,) and the grass bank in front, packed almost every day, even during the (work) week.

Getting stage fright when HB Jr siddled up next to me in the dunny in the (then) new Subi Members clubrooms sometime during the 70s.

Watching Eagles games courtesy of tickets bought with discount vouchers cut off EB or EE 30 can blocks. The seats (benches) were directly behind the western goals, and it was hillarious watching the feral Eagles cheer squad in full flight.

Way too many others to write about.

Absolute Gold , Jack.
Funny enough I have exactly the same memories of going to Fremantle Oval with mynGrandfather on a Sunday while he got pissed...lol exploring the entire oval, the old Vic Pavilion, which quite often would have doors unlocked to the original club rooms underneath that had all sorts of historic stuff stored. And getting driven home in his Ford Anglia , no RBts back then...

My old man is an inveterate boozer and was very difficult to pry from the Subiaco Bowling Club - before and after the game even half time.

Police Horses charging through huge crowd.

I kind of recall a lot of aboriginal supporters used to sit at that end and I always thought that fight was amongst them?

Yeah it was, was that 76? I was thinking 83??

I was at that game (83) behind the Perth end goals, and it was all about a bunch of bogan Vic supporters (probably Esserdon fans, but they were in Big V jumpers) stirring up the shit.
It got very willing, but they were well outnumbered. From (now faded) memory, a number of them were carted off by the rozzers, probably to get a kick in the arse at the lock-up, and sent on their ways.
I don't remember any horses, and besides, the crowd was way too compact to allow that to happen.

No problem with you doubting my memory, Grassy - I do it myself often enough. :)

It may well have been the '77 game - only the dates have been changed to protect the innocent.

The horses were normally kept standing by that big limestone wall that was a retaining wall for a access way between that and the WANFL members stand, it was also where the St Johns Ambulace was parked, the Horse Floats parked in there as well, from there at the end of the game they went staright on and escorted the umps off the ground. But they could also acess the hill from front or up the ramp at the rear, from my memory of the big brawl and there is footage somewhere the horses came down from the top near the caravans...and did a bit of crowd control so to speak.
