Bazza what do you recon 79 GF..53-55K.When the gates where thrown open.

Most people reckon 55K , some say 60k, but nah, I reckon jp to 55k max, what I remember is heaps of people climbing over fences, threw holes in cyclone wire , sitting on vans, and the gate getting chucked open to let the crowd surge in after bouncdown.

Lucky there wasn't a situation similar to Hillsborough

Lucky mate, we never had huge fences holding people in pens, if it got crowded at Subi, you could just jump over a 4 foot fence onto the oval, the problem at Hillsborough was fans got crushed against 8 foot security fences, no escape.

Just watched a documentary on Hillsborough, tragic series of events with the police 100% to blame

Yes an almighty screw up.

The Game Commander was a first timer, the previous Officer in Charge had run many many big games there with no issues, those responsible are now facing criminal charges.

The greek guy could be John Georgiadis who kicked 6 from memory but the main combatants were Willett and Melesso as well as Peter Higgins and anyone in a Subi jumper. Tony Begovich got stuck into Mick Lee while he was on the deck. There were plenty of others as well. I still recall Gary Kemp putting Higgins over the fence. It was a pretty good effort as Higgins had about 8 inches in height and 25 kilos in weight on Kemp. I've got it on dvd so might crank it up on the weekend and report back.

That was a very tough and spiteful first half in '88. Neeshams first game back after getting 8 weeks for breaking a Subi players jaw. Neesham was underdone but played a terrific game, did everything legal and illegal to get his team up but Subi were after revenge for the shellacking they got the previous year. Georgiades up forward and Brad Mcdougal in the mids, a couple of terrific left footers, carved the tigers up particularly after halftime and Keene was the dominant big man.

Neesham - One of the dirtiest players I have ever seen close up.

Police Horses charging through huge crowd.

I kind of recall a lot of aboriginal supporters used to sit at that end and I always thought that fight was amongst them?

That was the game where Keane shouldn't have been playing. Wasn't there controversy over whether he had played enough WAFL games to qualify.

My greatest memories are being in attendance for the 1990 SD flag, 2010 SD flag, the 1984 and 86 SOO Games with my school group and the 3 AC/DC concerts I have seen there. Wasn't allowed to go to 82/83/84 unfortunately as I was too young to go on my own as a 9/10 yr old and know one was able to take me so had to just watch on TV.
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

Swndog: good post. I could relate to a lot of that particularly about not being able to attend matches. I forgot about the 2010 grand final in my list, a game, which, as you said, was very memorable.
