was there for decades,

Police horses used to stand there for the big games like GFs & SOO but not sure why bit of a waste really as they probably could have fitted in another few thousand in to that area?

gtr: that true, that was a very physical game; I think Willet had a go at the big Claremont ruckman, together with Keene and Higgins. Another game, gtr, which had a little bit of biff was the 1996 grand final, as Claremont' Eagles players stampped their authority against a plucky EP team.

Was at CCR as well BC, great concert staged in front of the 3 tier stand, As someone said Zeppelin played their a few days prior, couldn't get tickets for that but could hear it pretty clearly from our backyard on Grantham Street Wembley.

Earliest memories of Subi were very early 60's waiting with my 2 bro's for the old man to finish work at his butchers shop on Cambridge Street on a Saturday arvo, mum would have the picnic blanket and basket ready with a thermas of tea, sangas and bickies and we'd sit behind the western end goals on the grass bank in front of the Brightspot caravan. Mum liked that spot so she could watch her favorite player Ocker and she quite liked Brian Sarre as well, so she was well located for that. Dad's favorite was Wally Martin, as Dad played on the wing as well, managed a couple of seasons in the subi ressies before and after the War. Great days and great memories and the crowds were always in the 8k to 12k range.

yes mate..CCR was in front of the 3 tiered stand and the stage faced towards it. the reverberation off the concrete was horrendous. I also used to watch Subi behind the western end goals and remember getting hit in the face by a footy kicked by one of the players having a shot when I was about 5 or 6. Cammy Blakemore was my favourite for years and then switched my adoration to Ocker when I was about 10. Ocker married a former Miss West Coast in Sue Long who by coincidence finished up my English teacher at South Freo High.

Willett and Melesso were at it all day and from memory Melesso got 6 weeks.. Also Higgins took on Gary Kemp down in the forward pocket at the eastern end and Kemp put him over the fence and in doing so, stuffed Higgin's finger up and he didn't return. Gerard Neesham had a go at Ian Dargie which wasn't very smart as Dargs had three or four on his chin before Neesham knew what was going on. There were a few others as well,,,,Mick Lee got belted at one stage and Kevan Sparks took someone out big time. The entire game was a demolition derby.

It was where they stored all the pipes for the irrigation, no pop up sprinklers back then so they had to lay out pipes.

Yes you are quite right I do remember them now on the back of a trailer.

I don't recall Neesham having a crack at Keeney....but do recall him whacking Mark Zanotti at one stage. The greek guy could be John Georgiadis who kicked 6 from memory but the main combatants were Willett and Melesso as well as Peter Higgins and anyone in a Subi jumper. Tony Begovich got stuck into Mick Lee while he was on the deck. There were plenty of others as well. I still recall Gary Kemp putting Higgins over the fence. It was a pretty good effort as Higgins had about 8 inches in height and 25 kilos in weight on Kemp. I've got it on dvd so might crank it up on the weekend and report back.
