It amazes me when the so called experts of the media, talk about how good rucmen are.Up and coming ruckmen or those who are set in the side. They don't rate Sandilands as the best ruckman in the competition, yet all are judged by how they perform against Sandi.Sandis name is awlays thrown up when ruck work is the topic. The bench mark, but not the best.
It leaves me gob smacked.

I suspect you already know the answer. In case you don't it is the same reason as Paul Medhurst won an All Australian playing for Collingwood and not when he was playing for Fremantle. It is also the same reason as there is no West Australian who didn't have a link with the VFL/AFL as a legend of the Hall of Fame. Simply if you are a Victorian or play for a Victorian you must be better per se than a West Australian.

Another consideration is that some of the more modern day commentators are unaware of the importance of a ruckman and rover combination. They are in awe when a rover reads the ball from a ruck tap or a marking contest.

Maybe perhaps, whilst i agree as a tap ruckman he has no peer, as a ruckman around the ground, taking marks and kicking goals im not so sure. So would ya rather have a Goldstein in form taking marks, winnig taps and kicking goals or Sandi. Its just another thought. Re the vic thing, i mean seriously how big is the chip on yer shoulder, how often do they rave about Eddie betts taylor walker from the crows, fyffe etc from the dockers.

Unka2 a simple challenge for you name ONLY TWO West Australians or South Australian that are legends in the Hall of Fame that HAD NO involvement in the VFL/AFL?

Its out old chestnut arguement Swan42, the VFL was considered the pinnacle of footy, as in the major comp. Thats the way these things pan out, ya make it in the "big time" then ya more likely to get a gig, thats the way it is viewed i reckon

anchor, currently I'd have Goldstein at #1 and Sandi at #2 only because Goldstein has a more rounded multi-dimensional game than sandi who has few peers as a straight tap ruckman.

The best ruckman I have seen play, pretty hard to go past dean Cox in recent times, Fitzpatrick changed the game as a super athletic ruckman but there is no question as to who was the best and he's a west Australian ... Polly Farmer.

anchorman wrote: you may have Goldstein, but I think Sandi was very much higher percentage for clearances than any other ruckman last season even with the few games he payed. His clearance work out does them all.

Clearance work can be over rated, many teams win clearances but still lose matches. Taking marks around the ground and kicking goals is another thing altogether. Sandilands flogged the cats at subi re hitouts etc, and despite that freo got well beaten.

anchorman wrote: Bollocks, clearances like Sandi gets are invaluable. He gets them in close and allows players like Fyfe and Co to clear the ball.

Well he dominated v cats, and they got flogged. Sandi is a tap ruckman, fine, thats about it. He aint a match winner like say Goldstien or Max Gawn.
