I'd rather maxwell than either of the Marsh's at least he ( arguably ) has an x factor, worth a punt for mine.

I must admit that watching the Australian batsmen crash and burn to a couple of spinners who didn't turn one ball on a pitch that didn't spin made me wonder what Ashwin and co will do to them on Indian tracks. Maxwells dismissal was particularly illuminating in that he allegedly has a reputation of being able to play spinners well

I may be wrong with this but wasn't there a NSW spinner who was plucked out of grade cricket in the 80's and plonked into an Australian team????? Was it Gavin Robertson? Very vague memories. If the Aussie selectors thought Fawed was the best they still should have picked him no matter what the Victorian selectors are doing.

I can remember a few NSW spinners who were not State regulars getting a Test cap in the 70s, 80s & 90s Mike from- John Watkins, Greame Beard, Bob Holland, Murray Bennett, Peter Taylor, Gavin Robertson et al.
Our selectors have had a history of picking spinners from out of nowhere.

Nup, our best leg spinner, albeit chinaman, is Hoggy by the length of the straight! That is an indictment. They picked the one with the most potential and that is Swepson easily.

SK Warne averagged 43 in India; and yet, they want to take Swepson, untried, to bowl the hardest art in the bowllers manual, in the toughest conditions, against the world's best players of spin.

They are setting him up to fail -- very unfair. I might feel a bit differentlly if they were on a full-tour of India, one where he could play first-class cricket to get acclimitised to the conditions

What is your alternative Ark? Should we just lay down and let them roll over us? Would you prefer off spin over leg spin? I agree Swepson is young, talented but untried and India for his Test match baptism is a huge ask, but I reckon on the positive give him a taste and chance to settle before we take on the Poms next season

SD: there is no easy alternatives you are correct. They have an off-spinner whom turns it towards the right hand batsman and left arm whom turns it away; in this sense the selectors have done their job. If he gets slaughtered in India you may not even be able to pick him for the Ashes series.

This actually happened to the bloke from Tasmania whom they took over there a few years ago. Do you remember?
