I was just reading another story about a GWS top ten pick from 2014 wanting out. His name is Caleb Marchbank. Not big news in itself but then I read on and goes on to say ;

"a host of Victorian sides — including Carlton, Essendon, Collingwood and St Kilda — are interested in acquiring the highly rated 193cm defender."

How many times are we hearing this the last few years? It seems to me the Victorian clubs are circling like sharks around these expansion clubs, in particular GWS. Now it may well be that a lot of these boys are Victorians anyway but it means there is another 80 plus players in the AFL these days and I think it's serving to strengthen the power base of the eastern states clubs.

I mean how many of these boys are ever going to come to the WA clubs unless they are ex WA boys but as we've seen there is a trend these days for a lot of these boys to not really show a strong interest in returning home. Jaeger O'Meara for example wants out at Gold Coast but wants to go to a Melbourne based club.

Franklin never showed any interest in coming home to WA. You could argue Franklin and O'Meara are the two most prestigious talents to come out of WA in the last 20 years.

I can see a few Melbourne clubs benefiting enormously from picking the eyes out of GWS and Gold Coast for many decades to come.

DD: it is something you have to live with old son: personally, I would rather see the Victorians winning their own competition than the expansion clubs in the so-called 'nothern football states'.

I apologise in advance DD but I couldn't resist the comment: surely Kim Hagdorn would have suggested that Franklin was going to come home and play for Freo.

To get back to the point, fundamentally the WAFL clubs are suffering because neither the AFL nor the WAFC are interested in supporting the WAFL competition and clubs. The AFL clubs draft players from the WAFL and don't give a stuff about the WAFL club and the impact it has on our competition. The AFL would much prefer to spend tens of millions propping up clubs like GWS, Gold Coast and Brisbane rather than in Aussie Rules heartlands like WA and Tasmania.

Can anyone name a league that has flourished since the VFL became the all-pervasive AFL? What have we lost in Perth alone? The WAFA, SSMFL etc.

They will live Grassy but don't kid yourself, Nisbett and Rosich are watching and taking notes. It is high time the two WA teams started getting first pick at the cherries on offer out of WA. After all that was the main reason the Eagles and the national competition was born, from our perspective anyway. That if our best WA talent was going to be lured east then we might as well have our own team made up of our boys!

And we all know how big a LIE that was that they would stay in WA.
