Grassy wrote: What a memorable tournament,eh? :silly:

Not too many tennis fans here then Grassy. I did watch some of it but there were very few memorable matches for mine. The Novak v Simon 5 setter was one and of course the womens final was a classic but too many one sided encounters. The Spectre of the match fixing allegations hung over the tournament I thought.

I was over at the tennis for the first 8 days of the tournament. Unfortunately, Channel 7 only seems to want to televise the top 3-5 players or Australians. It would appear that they think that the average viewer is not interested in anyone else. As a consequence a lot of the better matches don't appear on the two main channels. The other advantage is that you don't have to listen to the Channel 7 commentators and there constant "promoting" of their programmes. Also, it is a pity that one of them, B Zempilas, clearly did not know the rules of tennis.

It is very interesting to see the media reaction to Kyrgios. Apart from the rank hypocrisy, and how any Australian cricketer would have the gall to criticise any other sportsman's behaviour is quite extraordinary, it is amazing that the same vitriol and criticism wasn't extended towards the likes of Andy Murray and Lleyton Hewitt who are significantly senior in years to Kyrgios. One needs to give Kyrgios some time to see whether his behaviour does improve over time.

I also was able to see some junior matches whilst I was over there. It is a pity that there the sole emphasis of coaches is to hit the ball from the baseline and no matter what the scoreline just continue to do the same thing and hope that something will change.

Ozi Open is brilliant. It's run like clockwork. I caught a tram from Flinders St and your there in five minutes. Stops right in front of Rod Laver Arena. I was over there last week during the second week. Best time to go is the Quarter Finals stage where you see the best remaining eight men & women.

Serena got the jitters in the final which is unlike her. She got ahead of herself & thought about breaking records. Kerber wasn't intimidated by Serena at all and went for her shots and it paid off. Good to see someone else win it for a change.

Djokovic is at his peak of his powers and is a class above the rest at present. He is an amazing athlete and if he continues in this vein of form for three more years, he will become one of the greats in tennis history.

Grassy wrote: If Lleyton played at the Net more often,he would have had more than 2 Grand SlamTitles.A bit hard mind,as Wimbledon's the Only Grand Slam Event played on Grass.

If Newk was calling,I would have watched a bit more and used the Mute button a Lot more, with 7 flooding their Crap programs!

Grassy he was calling a match when he had to inform Basil Z about the rules of tennis.

Roman do you often go to the Australian Open and do you find that the prices increased significantly from last year's Open?

Agree with your comments re the tram to and from the tennis.

Interestingly it would seem that S Williams for the second consecutive grand slam tournament.

BH it is not a matter of serving and volleying, it is a matter of court craft and the inability to recognise when it is opportune to come to the net. I watched a Girls 18s match where the Australian won a number of points coming to the net in the second set. In the third set she remained at least 39 feet from the net and managed to lose a service game from 40-0 up and consequently the match after failing to come to the net on game point and put a simple volley away.

swan, Ticketing for Rod Laver and Margaret Court Arenas have been adjusted this year, with prices reflecting the category of seat and demand for the session.

For instance prices for Quarter Finals at Rod Laver Arena range from $145 (Category 3) to $270 (Category 1). This is for the Day Session. Night Session is $15-40 extra. It's not cheap but prices increase as the tournament draws into the pointy end.

You could always get a Ground Pass (which is entry to the outside courts) between $29-$54.

It all comes down on who you want to go and see and how much you're prepared to spent.

I like to go and see the best players against each other in week 2 compared to a good player playing someone I've never heard of before in week 1.

In 2015 I had the Day Sessions package for Margaret Court Arena for Monday - Thursday (Days 1-4) and Friday - Monday (Days 5 - 8). In 2016 comparable tickets were about $40 more expensive for the Days 1 - 4 package and about $100 more expensive for the Days 5 - 8 package. Specifically TA said it was for the convenience of spectators and not "to rip spectators off" when patently that is exactly what TA were doing. The other point to note is that for the first 4 days at the MCA there were two ladies' matches and one men's match.

The last time I had the Semi-finals and finals package was in 2008 and the tickets were 47% more expensive than in 2007; so you can see that TA has some form.

Certainly a ground pass, particularly in the first week, is reasonably priced considering the quality of some of the matches you would be able to watch.

Two other points to consider for non-Melbournian spectators to the tennis is the price of accommodation and of course the perennial complaint at virtually all sporting venues: the quality versus price of the food and drink at the venue.

Finally will I be going back in 2017? At this point in time I plan to return in 2017.
