An interesting read from Larry Graham ( ex pollie and now columnist)

www.watoday.com.au/comment/larry-graham-...20150906-gjg9iv.html

His main question in the article is why are VFL records included in all statistics relating to AFL when other states records are not. One of the examples he gives is Mick Malthouse breaking Jock McHales coaching record when they were essentially coaching in different competitions. Malthouse only became an AFL coach in 1990 when that competition was established. Food for thought.

Without Port adelaides rebel bid to join the newly formed AFL.South Australia didnt want to have anything to do with the VFL.On the couch Mike Sheen interviewed Graeme Cornes,Last year. The question was asked to Cornsey why the SA hate towards Vic.The reply was that the Vics didnt not acknowlege any Australian Football out side there state.

Terrific article - as he usually does. This has been a bitch of mine for a very long time. I believe it was this very forum where I voiced my opinion on this subject and was howled down by all and sundry.

What's wrong with the Brownlow Medal anchorman? I agree that all State's records should be included in the AFL.

Perhaps we can start with the legends of the AFL Hall of Fame. Why aren't WAFL players of the ilk of Billy Walker not legends of the AFL Hall of Fame? Why is there only one legend of the AFL Hall of Fame (I believe it is Barry Robram) that doesn't have a link with the VFL or AFL competitions?

By default I am actually with the Victorians on this one; we were dumb enough to join their competition so let it go. Everybody on this site knows that the Sandouver pre-dates the Victorian thing, they also know whom the Naylor winners were and so on and whom the state's great players have been. It is up to us to protect WA's football heritage independently of the Victorians. In addition, why should the Victorians have some of their football heritage done away with because others have joined their competition? Remember, if you re-name the Brownlow, you are mostly definitely undermining their traditions.

The WAFL themselves have sold our history down the toilet too..one example is the Simpson medal, now this should be the name of the best player in AFL Western Derbies as well (not being disrespectful to Glendinning though) . And if Wet Toast and the Shockers meet on GF day they should not only have the Norm Smith but the Simpson medal too. I also believe there should be two Sandover medals - one for the Fairest and best player in the WAFL and the other for the Fairest and Best out of the two AFL clubs. The count could be televised again, with all rounds of WAFL read out plus the two AFL games as well. Announce WAFL Hall of famers etc and make it a big night.

But of course this all changed on August 22nd 1986 when everyone apart from Swans and South Freo voted to join the VFL
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

Many WAFL & SANFL players went east & made their name. They went east to the VFL as they got paid what they were worth. Not what we would pay them. Some didn't make the grade. Farmer, Cable, Jackson, Rioli wanted to play at the HIGHEST STANDARD. I Bet Billy Duckworth would say his greatest moment was the Norm Smnith Medal in Essendon's premiership.

Just watched The Winners Rebooted from Round 2 1982 on Fox Footy where WA boys Jim & Phil Krakouer, Ross Glendinning, Steve McCann, Peter Spencer, Craig Holden, Peter Bosustow, Ken Hunter, Wayne Otway, Tony Buhagiar, Mike Fitzpatrick, Bill Duckworth, Allan Montgomery absolutely dominated proceedings in the 2 games shown pantsing the hapless Vics leaving them mesmerised not too mention SA boys like Blight, Hodgeman, Abernathy, Roberts, Maylin, Copping then include the Danihers from NSW, the TAS boys etc.

If it wasnt for the influence of these Interstaters the Vicco League would have been Ammo standard!! B)
