A true servant to the game of cricket on and off the pitch......his dulcet tones will never be forgotten.....very very sad day indeed, definitely one of the best, if not the best leggie, captain, commentator Australia has ever produced, a true gentleman liked/respected/loved by all......

Benaud was a huge part of my younger years getting up at the crack of dawn to watch all those test matches being played at the SCG,MCG,GABBA etc through the late 70's and 80's.

I "think" i have this right. When he decided to go into the media, he actually studied the profession, so as to "know what to do".
Just a pity some of his fellow media "stars??" dont have the same atttitude.
Thats part of the reason he was such an legend of the game.
RIP Richie

Benaud's broadcasting mantra was this:

"Put your brain into gear, and if you can add to what is on the screen, then do it. Otherwise just shut up".

Do any commentators have that mantra these days?
The man will never be replaced. We are blessed for having him, so thanks Richie. See you on the other side.

RIP Richie. Some of his famous lines are being quoted in the media this morning. Amongst them:

- “And Glenn McGrath dismissed for two, just ninety-eight runs short of his century.”

- (After a streaker ran on the field): “There was a slight interruption there for athletics.”

- “The slow-motion replay doesn’t show how fast the ball was really travelling.”

- “His throw went absolutely nowhere near where it was going.”

- “From our broadcasting box you can’t see any grass at all. It is simply a carpet of humanity.”

- “Laird has been brought in to stand in the corner of the circle.”

- “He’s usually a good puller but he couldn’t get it up that time.”

- “There were no scores below single figures.”

- “Well, Bruce Reid is not the worst batsman there is at international level? But those who are worse would not need to hire the Myer Music Bowl to hold a convention.”

- (On a Justin Langer six) “He’s not quite got hold of that one. If he had, it would have gone for nine.”

- “Captaincy is 90 per cent luck and 10 per cent skill. But don’t try it without that 10 per cent.”

- (On Shane Warne’s Ball of the Century in 1993) “Gatting has absolutely no idea what happened to it. (He) still doesn’t know.”
