I wonder how long it will take all those defensive coaches to figure out tactics to counter the player playing on around the mark? Umpires will have to give early calls of "play on" to give the defence a bit of a chance. They are too slow now as it is.
I thought that the AFL have brought in some silly rule changes in the past but this one takes the cake IMO.

Smokey all of the rules the afl are introducing are to try and improve the scoring.
They are being told by the TV networks who stump up the huge $$$$ to broadcast it there needs to be more goals as that also means more advertisement commercial breaks and we know that they are the ones behind the TV networks being able to pay those $$$$!

Can't wait to hear and see Steady Eddie back calling now he's no longer "calling" the shots at what is it, Emirates Centre of Excellence? Heritia, Leon and Andrew have a slightly different opinion.

Back to the rule - As I understand it you have stand on the mark and not move obviously forward but also now laterally. BUT if the I move a metre behind the mark (conceding that metre) can I now move wherever I want. it seems the point of the mark is the issue, so don't stand there!

Grump, you cant move backwards either. The player needs to decide do they man the mark or push back. Once stand has been called someone cant then man the mark.

The intention is to make it easier to mov e the ball, either laterally due to the man on the mark not moving, or forward if the defending team chooses to not man the mark.

Its not like they have decided we need to soccer kick the ball over the uprights or something like that.

Thanks, me I would tell my players to move away and leave the mark in general play but stay within the 15 meters to cover the space, anywhere close to the 50 line then man the mark. I would tell the umpires prior to play that what we are going to do and ask that as soon as the player deviates from his line the call play on ( I understand that this is also part of the rule [the Buddy hook]) .

Could create a bit of confusion or not

Probably how id play it to grump

That then puts the onus on the ball carrying side to move the ball quickly to eat into that space to get over the congestion, or to move it quickly on the 45 degree angle to open up space on the other side of the ground.

Either way it does what the AFL wanted and that is quicker ball movement and more focus on attacking rather than defending. Combine that with interchange caps dropping to 75 and we will see tired players not being able to get back later in games again opening up space to attack.

I reckon its a simple change to the rules that could have an impact on scoring.

It will cause confusion, but it wont be the difference between winning and losing for sides.
