See that Dole City, aka Mandurah, takes the Australian title of the jobless capital. 18%, obviously the dole bludgers flock there so they don’t have to work. I lived there for 3 years back in the late 80’s and it was a nice place. It’s certainly turned into a shithole since.

Agree 58 we lived down there for nearly ten years, had a boat lived near the beach, it was great, lots of fishing etc but it has 2 very different faces, those on the beach and canals and the eastern side where most of the welfare cases are. Coodanup High School was a war zone where the indigenous kids ruled the roost, Mandurah high was where the white trash went so we bit the bullit and sent the kids to a private school. Even back then the govt was just dumping the single mums and other welfare cases down there as the housing was cheap but it created all sorts of problems. Mandurah is now just somewhere for a day trip or to drive past on your way to somewhere else.

What is your source Sharkie? According to an article printed in Mandurah Mail on July 31 last year Mandurah's unemployment rate was 5.4 per cent - which was less than Perth and the rest of the state at the time. The City of Mandurah reported in March this year an unemployment rate of 6.9% - a statistic taken from the ABS labour force survey and Centrelink data and compiled by the Department of Employment. Seems a very big jump in just 4 months.

My brother has a house down near the Dawesville cut with views from his verandah across to the estuary on one side and the ocean on the other. He loves it and wouldn't live anywhere else....it might be a bit different in the 'burbs though.

I doubt that SS though can understand it probably seems that way. One of the rules of welfare elegibility is you must not move to an area of high unemployment where you are unlikely or less likely to gain employment.

Maybe that's one avenue Centrelink has available to it where they can declare a suburb, town or region a no go zone for anyone on welfare or applying for welfare if they are thinking of moving to Mandurah and surrounding areas. Make it mandatory for anyone receiving welfare to have to seek approval before they move that they will still be eligible to receive welfare payments if they move to that area.

That sounds like a good plan in theory DD but I'm not sure the government can dictate where a person lives.

There you go BC. That's been the policy for as long as I can remember.

Fair enough but they're not saying you can't move there....it's just that there might be consequences if you do.

The original article was on Perth Now. I found this one as well www.coastlive.com.au/news/local-news/man...t-rate-in-australia/

Incredible spike from 6.9 % at February to 18% by the end of July - if it is, as you say, down to dole bludgers suddenly flocking there then happy days. If not, and it is down to the impact of the pandemic as the article states, then it is a dreadful situation and people will be hurting. Something must be done.
