Bease: thanks and good post. I think AJ Richardson played for WA in view of the fact that the WACA appointed him coach during the late 1920s.

I was just going to message that I assumed this thread applied to footballers/cricketers since WA entered the shield in 1947/48 - my bad - because I was going to query Fred Buttsworth who played for the state just before the war. However, as it is pre-shield, there are Outridges (plural) and many others in the 1920s and 1930s fitting the bill.

SH there are 2 Fred Buttsworth's I assume Snr & Jnr as one (Snr) played cricket for WA in the 1920s whilst (Jnr) played cricket for WA 1947/48-1949/50 and WAFL & VFL football from 1942-1953.

AR yes Tom Outridge Jnr played cricket for WA & WAFL (1 game, 7 goals) for SU in 1944.

There wasnt a specific timeline on the availability but yes WA only started playing Sheffield Shield cricket in 1947/48, but still played first class cricket against touring sides and other states occasionally.
There were a number of big names that played the odd game for WA before the Shield started including William "Nipper" Truscott, Ron Doig, Bert Harrold, Carlisle "Bub" Jarvis & Jim Ditchburn included.

Sorry, I meant to say Wally Buttsworth who played for WA in 1937/38 and also for WP. And yes, there was Fred snr. and jnr., but there was also (off the topic) Dr Boyd Buttsworth (a cousin of Wally and Fred jnr) who was Swans' club doctor in the '50s and '60s

Ernie Bromley was the first West Aussie to play for Australia.. 1932-33 fourth Ashes Test.Not a bad effort to make the national side before 1947-48..It was another 24 years before another sandpaper made the national side.

GTR I remember in my Primary School library in the 1980s reading a great book on the history of WA Cricket and reading about the feats of the great Ernie Bromley, Keith Carmody etc.
Was a fantastic read and wish I could find a copy these days of that exact same book, twas a soft copy from memory.

BH was Ernie selected to the national side as a Perth club cricketer. Or was he playing on the east coast when selected. Would like to also read that book.
