I realise that a loss is not what any of want first up but I think that there was a lot to like abt your team Germs, Noble and a few others did well. Hewitt will grow into the game and give you more as each game comes around, Palmer is a better player than yesterdays game. I would not be so gloomy as I am not getting carried away by EP's win lots water to under the guildford bridge.

Have you been over that bridge lately? There’s a stench in the water that flows underneath.

The fact you yourself aren’t getting carried away with that win, and nor should you, shows that we should be alarmed. East Perth are no good either so losing in that manner to  a team that won’t contend was a sign of where we truly are at.

And while the ressies won it was very much the same game style. There also is only a bunch of kids, no seasoned players of any note like most teams have. Warrick Wilson the only one and he is far from league level fitness.

Gday Grump, it’s not the loss but more the lack of desire to take the match on that is hard to stomach. Your guys did and got the choccies whilst our ‘yellow’ footy game plan came up short against a team that dared to win.

agree with your comments re Palmer..he was one of a few of our ‘guns’ who struggled to get near it among a few others who where happy to get easy ball that took no yardage. Should be a lot more upside to Palmer a few runs in which I guess is a positive to take from this one.

I agree that we shouldn't throw the toys out of the cot over one narrow loss but there were a number of concerns that I have about the game style and the attitude of the players that I observed yesterday. There was just no animation or energy in the huddles and Pickering is too laid back IMO.
Germs is a promising ruckman but he is still developing and was monstered by the East Perth big men yesterday. My question is who is the 2nd choice ruckman? Ireland filled in as the stopgap but again he was pretty ineffective as East Perth dominated out of the centre. It really highlights how important Corey Gault has been over the last 4 or 5 years. There doesnt appear to be any other ruckmen in the reserves as they also appeared to improvise, so if Germs gets injured we seem to have nobody?
On a positive note we have got a good one in Kemp, he can play and will be a great asset, also guys like Palmer, Jones and Fisher will be better for the run and there will be improvement against the Sharks next week.

Does anyone really expect us to challenge the set in stone for the last decade Top 4 of SU, SF, CL & WP?
Then you thrown in Peel who are at full strength with Fremantle only having Fyfe out for any significant amount of time, and the likes of EP, EF & PE have all improved their list with experienced ins.
From last year we have lost Gault, Riggio, Howard, Jetta, Reidy, Anderson that is a hell of a lot of experience, leadership, talent and nous in one off season and a host of other depth players and havent really replaced them with like for like type experience.
Pina & Kemp were good yesterday, T.Watson will take time to adjust to a midfield role but other than those 3 it is just young kids coming up from the Colts who are being asked to step up into those roles and will be learning on the job.
J.Cameron who we apparently signed for 2 years is a bust he didnt even make it to Round 1 before dropping out.
Not sure where the likes of Cipro, Bright, Ottaviano etc where yesterday (injured or covid) but I was staggered O'Donoghue didnt play League, I thought he was very good late last season down back and had played alright in the pre season games?

I expect them to challenge the top teams BH because that it what they said in their glossy brochure outlining the 5 year plan. Competitive every year they said, challenging for the top echelons within 5 years. Oh well its only year 2 I guess so we have to be patient!
Of the guys you listed Gault, Howard and Anderson are massive losses of course. Riggio whilst a club legend struggled a bit last year, Jetta did SFA to be honest and Reidy whilst a very talented player was very inconsistent. The new guys, Pina, Watson and Kemp all showed that they will be valuable contributors this season. Disappointing about Cameron though. The one gaping hole in the recruiting though is another ruckman to replace Gault. Germs seems to be the only no 1 ruckman and if he get injured we will be in strife

Yes that is true Mike, they have been bullish about finishing Top 3 in all grades.
Time will tell if they are correct and or just a pipe dream.

As for our ruck stocks Brodie Morris who was ruckman in our Colts side last year would be the next in line, he acquitted himself ok in the pre season games is quite athletic but is still quite long and lean.
Jones from EP is a huge man and has played a few games at afl level so a big learning curve for Germs as will a similar type in Goddard be this week.

As a SD supporter we really must be concerned whenever we are in a close game as we inevitably lose all of them in the last 5 years or so including our last 2 and 3 of our last 4 games.
Once again you have to ask the question has this been addressed?
After we hit the front late, the ball goes back to the middle and the opposition win the next clearance easily and a goal is conceded within 30 seconds.
It is like watching a re-run over and over again.

We have also lost our last 4 games in a row now!
Great clubs who finish Top 3 or 4 consistently do NOT lose 4 games in a row!

BH and Mike I thought along with the mate I was watching with that Germs did well for the first half and that Jones really took control after half time. The bigger body took its toll. Perhaps you need two ruckman when you're coming up against a big body player.

It will be good learning for Germs to come up against a guy like Jones. I just hope the stress of carrying the load of the number 1 big man doesn't wear him down. Apart from Jones , It seemed to me that East Perth had a number of guys with bigger bodies and that Swans players were often pushed aside in the physical contests. I think this will become a problem for Swans as the season goes on
