Also, Bease, as you know better than I, there were other players, particularly at EF, whom were good footballers but not considered top notch here, whom did perfectly well in the VFL.

Now, if a bunch of under performing EF players could get a kick in the VFL it does not say a lot for their league in terms of being far superior to WAFL, does it?

Tim Gepp would be one from Subi in terms of the solid players whom did well over east.

In your opinion what was the best side SF had during that time was it the 79, 80, 81 when Maurice was weaving his magic on spellbound opposition or even the 83 side who had introduced some new wizards like Winmar, Roe, W.Matera etc?

I'd go the 1981 squad even though it finished lower and butchered the granny second quarter mate

Important to remember 1981 was a special year entertainment-wise we won't see that sort of thing again in football
Beas' is right 1981 saw a few sides topple the eventual finalists and good scores recorded all year

Ark which underperforming EF players in the early 80s were winning a kick in the VFL....bit harsh on Budgie, Judge, Purser and Sewell if that's who you are thinking of mate...thought all of them were more than pretty handy in the WAFL back in the day....Both Taylor and Turco struggled in the VFL around that time, yet had pretty decent WAFL careers

freezin -- to the players you mentioned == somebody must have under performed for you to finish seventh in 1980-81.

Perhaps EF over performed in 79....or were just still celebrating from 79...LOL

Though in all honesty SF, SD and Cl got dramatically better with sides, that history has shown will go down as one of their best ever in their respective clubs histories......SF had the 50's era and the early 80's era.....SD the 60's and 80's hatrick sides.....Cl the 80s and the early 2010-12 sides....

EF weren't the only club to struggle v Cl, SD and SF in those early 80s....but they had their fleeting moments from memory.

Which particular EF squad over the years do you rate as the best in your time Freeze?

Fair call Southy you blokes added the likes of Monteath (back from Captaining Richmond to the vfl flag in 1980), Dorotich, Cockie, Henwood, Mosconi, Begg, Roe, W.Hardie, Quick, Page & Motlop to the League squad from 1980 whilst leaving were Haddow, Bauskis, Cavanagh, Lockyer & D.Shaw back to Collingwood.

Success wise I would say 92-94 under Ken Judge.....Though I did enjoy wawatching the squad under Big Ron from 83-86...youngsters in Wrensted, Mainy, Lockyer, Brennan, Bennett, Harding, Browning, Waterson, Rankin Jones, Johnson et al along side older campaigners in Bomber, Alexander, Budgie, Stevie Green, Turco, Solin x 2 and Neesham....Though they did lose 2 GF in 3 years to a great SD team and up n coming great Subi team.

Favourite EF side of all time....has to be the 79 side....a few WAFL greats in their prime(Peake,D Green, Budgie,Sewell), youngsters coming through(Judge, LesterSmith, Taylor, Purser, S Green, Kickett) and under the radar sorts(Lecras, Carrott, Dobson, Cormack, Crouch)...great year 1979.

Though that 97/98 team was great as well post WCE/Freo....lost 97 on a Spalding brain fade and killed it in 98 losing only 2 games all season.

But 79 for me....only a one off though, unlike for you SD fans from 80-85...great times indeed.

Merv Carrott gee there is a name I havent heard in a while was a tough half back flanker for Old Easts played a very good game in the 79 GF as well from memory Freeze.
One player who I always thought was a classy player but missed out on both the 79 & 85 Premierships was Jeff Cassidy. Was very good on both feet, skilful, quick and boy he knew where the goals were. Doesnt get the accolades of the likes of Peake, Buhagiar, Taylor, D.Green, Judge, Purser, Sewell etc obviously but gee he could play. Mario Turco was another.

Yeah tremendous year and watched the replay.

I also gave Brad Hardie a call on 6 pr the next day and had a quick chat about it.

I asked him what happened to Ray Bauskis that year as Don Haddow played at FF only player to play in 70 and 80 GFs ( he was pretty ordinary that day tbh), he played 3 games, I think he got injured and never came back.

Swans were just emerging as a power and later in the 80s would assert themselves later.

The great powers of the early 80s, SF, Claremont, EF came from a brief slump to be back in the mix later.
