.
I suppose this is an example of adopting the "player first mentality". Of course playing a Kiwi Aussie Rules teams is far better for their development than playing potentially WAFL league matches.

The pure arrogance and dare i say it IGNORANCE of Victorians is breathtaking in the extreme.
42....thought you were all for the holistic approach?.....surely an adventure to another country to expand the game elsewhere at such a young age is showing the kids that sport is a good way to meet people from all walks of life, different sporting cultures, visit different countries etc.....an opportunity they may not get later in life working 9 -5 getting paid fark all playing in the WAFL....even if they get that far in their footy career.......these kids are 16/17 getting a fantastic opportunity to broaden their horizons...

....yeah the challenge / competition they may get footy wise might not be crucial in their footy development playing sub standard opposition....but hey mate what did the EF colts boys get out of kicking SD colts boys arses by 9 goals development wise last Sat?.....surely a tough fought close game would of been more beneficial for the EF colts boys development?......

You beat me to it Grassy.
Freeze there is 6 months of off season to do these junket trips for the talented kids why on earth do the VaFL mugs organise them during footy season when they should be letting them play real footy games with their mates before they are whisked away at years end ffs!

Freezin you want a response; well here it is. It is nothing more than a Victorian-centric, ego driven load of drivel. It shows complete disdain and WORSE IGNORANCE of the WAFL. AS I have mentioned there IS NOT ONE West Australian who is a legend of the Hall of Fame that did not have an involvement in the VFL/AFL. It is patent nonsense that players of the ilk of Bill Walker, Steven Michael, Derek Chadwick et al are not Legends in the Hall of Fame. How is John Todd not a legend of the Hall of Fame? Why isn't Austin Robertson not a legend in the Hall of Fame and he had some involvement in the VFL. How can Gordon Coventry be considered a Legend and Austin Robertson not? What a joke. The names I have mentioned are just some that should be legends of the Hall of Fame.

Certainly going overseas would be considered a useful part of their development. The point is and it is very integral to the discussion it DOES NOT have to be during the WAFL season. It is a bit like when the AFL in (again) there complete and utter contempt of things non-Victorian that they had their draft during the period Year 12 students in WA were doing their final exams.

42...not too sure where your AFL legends rant came from.....what has that got to do with development of the Academy kids?..as for doing these trips during footy season when else should they be done?....during cricket season or during the xmas break?...Footy season is already long enough....how is that helping the kids development by extending their season?....You wanted holistic development mate didn't you...not too sure how player first is facilitated on these academy adventures.

What are your thoughts on the private school kids having to play School footy instead of WAFL footy...isn't that a player first attitude by the schools?

Name ONE PSA school that does not want to win games in any of their competitions? The "AFL rant" speaks to the ARROGANCE and IGNORANCE of the Victorian-centric AFL and that something not intimately connected to the AFL must be useless. For the record the players and parents have a choice. Play for their private school or find another school.

Here is a simple question for you Freezin which is better: playing a WAFL league game if good enough or playing against a NZ team?

LOL...Grassy tell me what the EF Colts boys got out of that 9 goal win v Perth Colts the other day in terms of their footy development?....walk in the park stuff I was told apparently....

Not many kids get to say they represented their country....more so playing footy....can't see the problem TBH...free trip overseas....get well looked after...play some footy soak in another country's sights and culture...win win I reckon...from a holistic perspective at least

if your colts are not getting anything out of playing colts footy then put them in your league or reserves team.

Very true MO....unfortunately EF didn't employ me to make those decisions...would love to see Wiley do that....though considering a winning environment is considered productive for a player's development think EF Colts boys are best to stay where they are....nothing productive about playing in a team that gets hammered each week eh MO?

based on what I saw saturday, East Freo have a decent group of senior players, just drop off towards the bottom of their list.
wont take much to turn it around if they get some decent kids in there.

Think some of their top end Colts who can still play have been pushed up and taken care of East Freo at senior level. Probably got a fair bit out of that. Hopefully some may take note but not holding my breath.
