we lost it in the third quarter when we did not show enough urgency with the wind.

Actually i think Mainwaring and Green probably deserve higher rankings. Both seem to have played defensive roles - probably uncustomary for the former. Green seems to have been opposed to Peter Spencer for much of the match. The 85 GF was a hard match that is for sure - a great grand final. Both teams completely committed with few passengers. Gavin Wake had a solid 2nd Semi so had made a strong case for re selection - and the team remained unchanged from that win. Both Graham Kickett and Scotty Rowlands had played in the last H & A game but failed to press claims on a spot. Jones (16 H & A games that season) and Hoult (13) were their replacements.

You often hear this theory that it would of been a draw - but it would not of necessarily been so as the course of the match would then be completely different as a result. It would of returned to the centre for a bounce and who knows what would have happened from there - Scott almost certainly would not have goaled on the siren. A goal would have had to be conjured elsewhere.

t-m: that is true; all you can say about it, is that Subi would have had the momentum going into the centre bounce.

Yep ...agree Ti Em...who knows what might have happened. EF could have taken it away from the centre restart after Sells' goal and kicked the sealer. All I know is that EF were deserved winners in a cracking game of footy and fortunately, we were able to get revenge the following year.

We were the form team going into the finals, we had won 7 on the trot including the final qualifying game against the eventual premiers. We blew the 2nd semi through inaccuracy but that's all good as the prelim is one of my all time favorite games, the changing of the guard...

It may be the case that the eventual Premiers - with top spot sewn up weeks earlier, may have put the cue back in the rack after 3 quarter time of the RD 21 clash.

we would have won the flag had we won the second semi -- ef was buggered at the end of the gf, imagine what they would have been like had they had to play SD the week before

the truth is, we botched with the 16.17.

I think so Ark. In 86 old easts won the last 7 straight and flogged us in the 2nd semi, I thought we were in a much better position to win it in 85 than 86, but there you go
