But I was a bit too young to properly compare. Old Pococko used to know a lot about Keith Watt

PoCocko!!!! Now there was a passionate Subi man. I've never known anyone to hate a rival club like he did with WP. He used to give the falcons supporters a bit of hurry-up on FG back in the days....very entertaining. :P

From the 1980s the following Subi players were always good against my mob-

Gary Buckenara
Laurie Keene
Warren Dean
Andrew MacNish
Dwayne Lamb
Brian Taylor
Neil Taylor
Clint Brown
Mark Zanotti
Todd Breman
Peter Featherby
Stephen Sells
Phil Scott
Dean Kemp
Brett Heady

good one bease: I actually forgot about Buckenara when i was thinking about comparring watt and kemp. He played mostly in the midefield for us too. I believe a lot of eagles supporters put kemp in the top two or three eagles? If this is true, than he would have to be up there for subi players?

Dean and macnish used to play well at bassendean. I remember the latter running in to kick the winning goal in 1985: all i could think about was him tripping over his two feet and embarrassing himself in front of 10,000 swans supporters; thankfully it did not happen that way.

bh: i think buckenara was one of the few subi players whom did not have a complex in regard to sd, at least as an individual player. he kicked 9 and 6 goals respectively, as you know.

in the 1979 game, do you think, sd ever thought of giving him his tenth in the last quarter?

AR 9 goals in any game is a great achievement by a player (almost unheard of in this dull era) but to do it whilst playing in the centre when your team kicks 20 majors and you lose by 20 goals it has to be right up there with some of the all time great single handed performances imho.

bh: a great tribute to Buckenara, and as you stressed he deserves it. It is bit hard for Subi supporters to heap praise on it, because your beloved black and whites had kicked a record score. The other point, we should mention about his performance, was his age, playing in just his first full season of league football.

Do you remember the 1981 game? What happened in the first quarter? Were Subi good or SD a bit lax?

Love these stories guys - thanks!
By the way - my late Dad was a member and avid follower of Subi for almost 60 years and he rated Ali Pickett up there as his favourite player to pull on the maroon and gold. Not bad considering the players he saw. Laurie Kettlewell was the next on his list.

sinha: i am glad you like the topic. Pickett had ability there was no doubt about that; we were very lucky to have him indeed.

Can’t comment on Keith Watt but if you’re including vfl/afl footballers Kemp surely goes close to Subis top five all timers, one word CLINICAL

TOO-- thanks: once he left Subi i never followed him too closely, but i always had the impression that he was, as you wrote, extremely highly regarded by the Eagles.
