Interesting game last Saturday v Sowfs, they came to play and really had our measure in the first half. They had a very effective centre square setup which was based around a series of blocks on guys like Menagola, Kitch & Horse which worked reasonably effectively for a half at least. After halftime the boys seemed to wake up and we dominated the game to run out comfortable winners.
Most opposition teams are convinced the flood will beat Subi, but at WAFL level for the G7 clubs at least it's really hard to maintain an effective flood for 4 qtrs. While I wasn't at the game v WP, I don't think they flooded, more relied on their pace and quick ball movement to get over us (plus our abysmal goal shooting). It was evident that after halftime Souths were almost a spent force, Subi never seem to be the quickest team but we are extremely fit and bigger bodied for the most part. Souths tried to ruffle a few of the boys feathers in the first half but paid for it in the second half when we put on some really solid tackles and bumps, something the Umps find difficult to deal with. Heals superb side bump was penalized as being high only to see the Souths boy get up holding his left arm and shoulder, not his head, never like to see a player hurt but it was a perfect side bump. One major disappointment in the umpiring is they were once again sucked in by Ham's and Schloethe's consistent ducking tactics which is a blight on the game. Both these players are top shelf WAFL players and don't need to do it, Ham's was nearly decapitated in one ducking instance, he is contributing to the outcome and should take most of the responsibility if he gets injured. The game was pretty even up to 3/4 time as most stats showed except for the frees which were 20 to SF and 12 to us, another example of the inexplicable free kick discrepancy Subi have faced all year and in this game made worse by Hams and co ducking. Subi were dominant in the final term and the frees ended up at 24 to 18 so 4 to 6 in a 7 goal to 1 last qtr.
Menagola was sensational again and if this form continues he could amazingly be right in the mix for the Sandover after missing the first 10 games and given he's in the state screening for AFL scouts may get another chance at that level. Woody's best game so far, he looks more and more confident and when Boland went down early he really stepped up. The backline was a solid team unit once again and Bestry held his own against Souths solid ruck combination. Solid return by Rumba, Twoemey & Robbo, gotta love the work of Kennedy, solid little tough nut, absolutely fearless and Mooresy had another good game, his disposal was terrific, almost always hitting up his target.
Thought we may have suffered with Yazz being dropped to the 2's for missing a training session and losing Boland early but everyone stepped up to cover. Great effort by the boys playing 95% of the game with one less rotation.
Real danger game next week against the Ducks up at Bombo valley, they will be more fanatical than usual after falling over against Claremont, they have to win every game from here on to make sure of a finals spot. Always a full-on clash when we go up to their paddock, we cant afford a soft start like the Souths game against this mob or we'll be chasing them all day. Not much for Subi to play for re ladder position but huge incentive for the players to put in maximum effort to make sure they are in the hunt for a game in the finals.
Dela reported he's ready for a run but given our safe position on the ladder I would think Schoey wont take any chances with him and he'll have a run in the 2's next week. Still a few injuries around the place but the boys coming in have done a fantastic job.
