Off the top of my head Mike.WSC cant remember to many wearing the helmets,Never forget Tony Greig with that motorbike helmet.Hooksy and Greig where the first two that come to mind. That being late 1970's by the mid 80:s it was only Smokin Joe and Beefy that where not wearing them. But even when Ian Chapple made that small comeback to 50 over cricket maby 79-80 dont think he wore a helmet.

I remember Dennis Lillee sconed Derek Randall in the Centenary Test when he was just wearing a cap. Fortunately for Randall it was his head otherwise he could have been seriously hurt.

I was at the WACA the day that Geoff Lawson was hit by a West Indian bowler (think it was Garner but may be wrong) That wasn't a pretty sight and I think it would be fair to say that Lawson could have been in serious danger without a helmet. As it was it was bad enough with a broken jaw.

BC -- just shows you how well Randall played in that innings, especially as England came close to recording the highest run win on the fourth innings in test cricket history.

The worst incident I can remember readding about was when John Lever hit Ewen Chatfield, a bad one, considerring that he could not bat at all and it was before the days of helmets.

Mike 1988,,the test where Graeme Wood scored a big 100 and Steve Waugh scored 90's in a big partnership.Ambrose or Patrick Patterson the bowler.
Remember the test Mike.Merv Huges got a hat-trick.The last two wickets of the Windies first innings. Then 1st ball second innings.Gordon Greenich Lbw first ball..

too true AR...I think he scored 170 odd in the second innings against a pretty handy Aussie attack.

Yes the pitch was a bit dodgy in those days with lots of wide cracks developing as the match went on. The West Indies loved playing in Perth. In 1993 Ambrose took 7-1 in one spell and was unplayable.
I always rated Wood highly as a batsman and if he had been from NSW I reckon he would have played a lot more tests

They were only about 4 or 5 down at tea and needed less than a hundred. Then the Queen visited the ground and put the mockers on them. Lillee then ran through them. Great game of cricket.

mikeh: I think Randall was dismissed by Kerry O'Keefe, which, in the context of the match and history, is almost his claim to fame in test cricket.

Think you might be right there AR, Skulls commentary on the ABC was his real talent. Sorry to be taking this thread all over the place as I know its about the Hughes inquest but I was delighted to hear an interview with Jim Maxwell on the ABC last Sunday. For those who don't know he suffered a stroke while commentating on the Rio Olympics in August and has been in hospital for 7 weeks. Appears like he is recovering well and his voice sounds the same. He does have mobility problems however and is only a chance to come back to commentate on the Sydney test and one dayers this summer.
