Tigers, Swans take colts to the grassroots

John Townsend, The West AustralianMay 24, 2013, 7:38 am

Claremont and Swan Districts are planning a colts match in Broome with most players coming from the Kimberley and Pilbara regions.

The Tigers home game in July will be played for premiership points with only five players on each team travelling from Perth.

Claremont colts coach Ben Dyer and his Swans counterpart Daniel Spencer will take charge of the teams.

Tigers football manager Dean Horsington said the game should be confirmed next week.

"It helps strengthen the football pathway by giving young footballers in the Kimberley and Pilbara a chance to take part in a very significant match," he said.

Claremont have 11 players on their current list who originated from the Kimberley while Swans have eight from the Pilbara.

In an indication of the challenges facing WAFL clubs in their bid to retain players from the north, Claremont premiership players Gerrick Weedon and Alroy Gilligan have both returned to the Kimberley this year.

The main reason for this game is for all players in the North WAFL club zones to register with one official colts game, therefore tying them to that club if they happen to never come to Perth and go elsewhere and get drafted, then the money will go back to that WAFL club.
Also I doubt many scouts would of been there as the National 16's last round were on Friday and Saturday in Sydney.

great win by the boys - intensity was great for 4 qtrs, a few easy goals conceded but Claremont are a quality side so that happens..
backline was excellent, mids worked hard and forwards were dangerous..
well done to Elari and Rogers, both stood up and contributed and showed they were keen to play for the jumper..
Elari is a real goer around the packs and apart from 1 silly 50 that cost a goal was great all day..
best game Notte has played, was everywhere..
pity Lammie walked out, tough ask for young Lobb to carry the ruck for the rest of the year against the big bodies but that is the way it goes..
need to keep backing it up now..

Proves that Hitout stats are overated as Lobb did a great job against the odds and we won the hard ball. Wet Toast regularly win hitout stats by a long way and still lose games so hit outs for me are of little matter if your mids cannot capatilise
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

I didn't know it until I looked it up now but there would appear to be 25 football clubs in the Kimberley. On raw numbers alone, that region is as strong as any of the recognised big name country leagues - if not stronger. Bit of an eye opener for me.

Always going to be the problem of getting these lads to relocate to Perth. Scary place the big smoke for a lot of these lads.

EDIT - 25 clubs...no country league in WA can compete with that. Albeit that the region is split into Central, East and West leagues.

The Pilbara has 14 clubs split into 3 leagues - North, Newman, Fortescue - not too shabby either.

Played a season up there in the Kimberley's during the 90's La Hincha...some of the best footballers I've ever played with & against and by far the most enjoyable season I ever played, An eye opener and a real privilege. Was a carnival like atmosphere when u had the night game fixture and there was nothing better than the after game bbq's where u'd eat anything from dugong to roo-tail cooked to perfection in a big hole in the ground. Great memories of Kimberley Footy
