There is some talk going around on social media today that Brisbane have made approaches to Lachie Neales management about him being traded to the Lions for their first round draft pick. Surely Freo wouldnt want to lose Neale who has been far and away their best player for the past 2 years. But if the Dockers want Mcgovern would they consider a 3 way trade with Adelaide getting the pick? (number 4 I think).
Personally I wouldnt want Freo to lose Neale but they are going to have to give away something significant if they want Mcgovern.

McGovern has had injuries and missed a significant amount of football so its a bit harsh by some to talk about his average goals per game etc. For a start when he plays forward he is there 3rd tall behind Taylor Walker and Josh Jenkins. I'm pretty sure he's been used down back also.

My original post:

McGovern is a second or third tall forward, gets injured a bit and doesn't kick a lot of goals. He is not what Freo need.

Gov Jnr is a contested marking beast like his brother and (unlike McCarthy who looks for easy kicks out by the boundary) that is exactly what Fremantle need up Forward!

Hardly call him a marking beast. At the end of the day he is a forward who doesn't kick a lot of goals. Not what we need.

Where does he play when not injured JB? He looks mobile and quick and agree with Beas he has very good hands like his brother and is a good kick. I think from memory he kicked a goal from 50 in the showdown earlier in the year that put them in front before he got cleaned up and PA goaled to win the game.

And remember his brother Jeremy was very injury prone early in his career. And I recall a Claremont supporter telling me before he got drafted Jeremy has a younger brother running around in the colts that might be better than him.

I remember a Claremont supporter telling me? Please. Kicked a goal from 50 metres. Fact: he doesn't kick many goals and he seems to be injured quite a bit, his stats are marginally better than McCarthys and he doesn't kick any more goals than him and McCarthy is, according to a few here, useless. Am I missing something? Freo need a big key forward not another 2nd or 3rd forward, he is smaller than most midfielders.

JB in an ideal world we all like to have a tall key forward but in reality most clubs don't have one. Buddy kicked one or two goals in the win over Fremantle in the 2013 GF. It was Gunston who was the most damaging forward that day and I dare say he is a similar height and build to Mitch McGovern. And WB didn't have a key forward when they won in 2016 though I think Boyd kicked a few but he played in the ruck and Richmond has one of the smallest forward lines going around.

I think we are talking around in circles here. Regardless of size (most GF winners have at least one tall up forward and always have had) He does not kick enough goals(he is a forward) If Freo had at least one true big talented forward, MM would be a handy addition to that set up but we don't so it is my humble opinion he is not what Freo require at the moment. Tabener is pretty big but he roams all over the ground and is not a full forward in the true sense. I'm not saying he has no talent, simply not Freo really need now.

I know logic is not used in vast quantities on this site but would one expect Freo or West Coast to have a better chance of gaining his signature if he chose to play for a WA domiciled AFL team?
