I would be happy to trial the new rules because as a spectacle our game is stuffed.

The rolling mauls have to be stopped immediately. As other posters have said we need one on one duels and 100 goal a year forwards to brings the kids back.

I do have an alternative though to set zones at throw ins and bounce downs.

Just the single rule:..........If you take possession of the football at a throw in or bounce down you must KICK THE BALL. Otherwise if you handball a free kick is awarded against you.

The result the footy is cleared without regard to position and you had better have players 30 metres or more away to take possession.

Simple but effective and remember the name of our game is FOOTBALL!!!!....

so they have finally admitted that the game is naffed? That is what happens when you allow coaches to take over the game -- Rodney Eade, Paul Roos, Clarkson, Lyon -- all leading the charge. The Victorians have always been defensive buggers in their mentality to the game; Ross Smith, apparently, when he was at Subi, stressed defensive play, although admittedly in one-on one contests. The Victorian attitude is strange in a way because, as we know, they have produced some wonderful footballers whom have great natural ability.

Two changes would fix it with ease:

ban had ball from set plays -- ie from marks and free-kicks -- get rid of the advantage rule from free kicks
go back two players on the interchange bench
