UK: I understand, but you need to be careful about comparring compettions. Featherby was a great long before he went to the Cats, same with Fitzpatrick

Jonnie leonard
Brighton Diggins
Billy Faull
Johnnie Bowe

all played in the 1931 grand final against WP
in 1932 -- Leonard coached South Melbourne
in 1933 Diggins, Faull, Bowe all played in South Melbourne's premiership side

What does the fact that those four Subi players were sucessful where ever they played tell you about the standard of the competitions in WA and Victoria? It tells you that, a good footballer in one state was a good footballer in another without question.

apologies to Old Easts fans, as I have knicked a premiership off you. In 1931, Subiaco lost the grand final to EF not the Cardies.

Funny how times change...TI wouldn't be rucking these days and at 188 cms or so would be a big bodied midfielder....I think Pat Cripps is around 189 or similar...Stephen was a fantastic player though.

Anch: on Featherby keep in mind that he did the following:

Geelong FB
Subiaco FB(2)
Simpson Medal 1973
Premiership player 2
recorded the highest number of possessions in both the VFL and the WAFL
state games representted both WA and Victoria twenty times
he was the best player in the WAFL in the mid 1980s alongside the great Wiley

Have I made a pretty good case for 'great' rather than 'good' Anch?

The only time I re-call talking about the VFL was when my grand dad laughed at Essendon's failure to stop Moss returnning to Claremont.

When I was a young bloke playing in the far north, a bloke from the opposite team rolled up wearing a Collingwood tee. Couple of us had to ask where this team played. WA footy was king, Vic footy didn’t raise an eyebrow.

As time went on tho 58 most wa footy followers would watch the winners, and most had a VFL team they followed. Not sure if many Vics knew much about the WAFL. dems the facts

Yep, i used to watch that show too, but never actually followed any team seriously. Had a soft spot for Geelong coz of their colours, but those days i didnt get much joy out of their games!!! They got toweled up a lot back then. The vics were and still are like the yanks, if it didn’t happen in america, it didn’t happen......if it didn’t happen in victoria, it didn’t happen!!

I mean ther would be people on this earth whom ar unaware that nuclear weapons exist, but their lack of knowledge, in no way denies the fact of the existence of the weapons.

Victoria is just a pissant little state in the real world scheme of things but they really do believe they are bigger than Texas (or WA for that matter) over there boys with such grandiose claims of being the "sporting capital of the world"   what must the citizens of London, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Dallas, Tokyo, Rio, Moscow etc even Sydney closer to home think of those absurd claims?!?!

BH: I agree. In regards the standard of the two competitions the simple truth is that if you starred for SD S, or any other club in the WANFL, you starred in Victoria. That goes, in Subi's case from Johnny Leonard all the way through to Matt Priddis.

anch -- it is good that you nammed the players you regard as great -- I would agree with you. -- we will use those players as the measure from now on -- but keep in mind that the players you nammed were/are at the top of the football tree, so to speak, the Victorians would call the 'legends' on a different level to the great.

Anch: would you regard Peter Matera as a great, in the Marsh mould?
