It seems that Supposedly so of the best decision making umpires are missing out on games ,due to their inability to bounce the ball.Jordan Bannister, who I considered one of the best umpires, has said that the inability to bounce has an influence on confidence. He wasn't the best bouncer, battling to get the ballover head high. But
he was a good umpire,in my opinion.
So what to people think?

The parallel would be you have a brilliant footballer who is a superb mark but couldn't kick over a jam jar; he doesn't make the elite level. The bounce is part of the very essence of Aussie Rules and should be kept. To me it is all part of the agenda by the umpire in empire building and getting 4 field umpires on the ground at the same time.

the bounce is an archaic link to days gone by...the umpies throw the thing up anyway when they stuff up the first try so why not do away with it and just throw the bloody thing in the air. they also throw it up at stoppages around the ground so I can't see the point of bouncing in the centre square.

Since the introduction of the 10m centre circle the bounce has become irrelevant. None of the ruckmans skill of judging and reacting to a bad bounce is required now. Also gone is the ruckmans courage having to stand under a off centre bounce that was landing on his head as the other ruckman charged from 15-20m away trying to kill him in the process of winning the tap.

Let's change the 6 points for a goal to 15 points; 6 points for a goal is so passe.

More importantly the umpires should be putting more emphasis on getting their decisions right...and stop the guesswork and playing favourites!

42 the moving to 3 umpires hasnt improved umpiring one iota in fact it could be argued the standard has gone backwards at a rate of knots, a move to 4 would be nothing short of a disaster for the football industry not to mention financially!
A move back to 2 field umpires would be far more beneficial in all aspects in my opinion.

Thanks JB and BH. Let's see here are a couple of predictions: I will vote for the ALP at this year's state election AND there will be a concerted effort to bring in 4 field umpires in concert with the abolition of the bounce for season 2019 or earlier.

Just bounce at the start of the game for old times sake and chuck it up after that.

that could be an answer Bazz...maybe at the start of each quarter as a compromise but I'm still failing to see the point. given some of the crazy rule changes trialled on recent years by the AFL I don't think it's a big issue personally

Yeah, it would be purely nostalgia, but your right, bugger all point really.
