I think we have to go back a fair way to think of players that have been traded between the two West Australian clubs. I thought I would start this topic since there is so much talk about Ballantyne possibly wanting a trade to WC.

I'm scratching head already and can't think of many.

I think Greg Harding switched from Fremantle to WC.

Scott Watters started at WC but ended up at Fremantle via Sydney but I am more so talking about players that have made the direct switch.
Get on your bike.
It was Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve.

I think it's fair to say that there have been no top trades done between the 2 clubs.

The trades and what they didn't get or gave up to just land the likes of Phil Gilbert, Chris Groom etc etc was far worse

Nothing wrong with Phil Gilbert as a player and can tell you that from experience.

Had expanding business dealings that didn’t fit in with the dockers ideology of anti education and work interests of its players.

Wasn't the only player who had conflicts with the club over that.

Unless that experience was at AFL level, then cannot contemplate changing my opinion

Freo gave up far too much for a bloke Melbourne drafted at 19 and was not getting a regular game - another Neesham ala Claremont tinge to Freo.

8. Phil Gilbert
A promising defender with Claremont, Phil Gilbert was drafted by Melbourne with the 19th selection in the 1991 National Draft but was given few opportunities to impress. His former coach, Gerard Neesham, was keen to have him in the Dockers’ inaugural squad so the newly formed port club traded one of their zoned players to acquire Gilbert’s services. He managed just 14 games in two seasons for the club before being delisted while Melbourne got the most out of the player they received in the deal – Jeff Farmer. Although Farmer would later become a Docker in 2002, they have ruing the missed opportunity to have services of the talented goalkicker on their list from the very beginning. Gilbert became Peel Thunder’s inaugural captain in 1997.

Kirbs, you come across as pretty informed so I would hate to think you are off the mark by your opinion in the first paragraph, hope it’s got nothing to do with personal or sour grapes?

To say, or should I say the writer of the article says, that Farmer was going to be the same type of player at the dockers is just pure conjecture and crystal ball gazing and to suggest its Gilbert’s fault for any trades done comes across as the raw prawn.

Also suggest you;

revisit 1994 to see how many backmen were available to the recruiters from AFL ranks or even the WAFL, especially full and centre half backs.

reread my second paragraph to understand the mindset of the dockers at the time which expected total serfdom of the players at the expense of their families, careers and education.
