Just thought I would make a thread to discuss all the comings and goings of the trade period. Whats everyones thoughs on it so far?

I am surprised WCE are making a move on Varcoe. I dont think he is the type of player they should be hunting. Yes he has a bit of toe but we need some big bodied mids to get it out to our existing outside players IMO. I feel that he could almost be another Wellingham - good in a great team but shit in an average team.

I also cant believe the Hawks have managed to get Frawley. The AFL needs to put a stop to the top teams getting top players. Its just going to make the AFL even more lop sided.

Who are the big bodied mids wanting to move clubs?
I agree they need them.
Would Mitch Robinson be worth looking at?

Varcoe would be an ok get imo,he's a better option than Hill in the forward line and he can play further up the ground.
In all honesty though he wont move his family over here he will stay in Melbourne most likely and move to a Melbourne based club.

You dont lose your talent overnight...theres still some hope Wellingham will come good.
He certainly isnt and shouldnt be the number 1 mid which i suppose highlights the fact the they are shy on with quality/bigger bodied mids.

Hawthorn lost Buddy last year, Geelong lost Ablett. Probably the best 2 players in the comp. The challenge is to get to the top and stay there. This isn't community footy.

They said they wanted big bodies mids to compete with other clubs, I would hardly call Varcoe a big bodied mid.He is more an out side speedster who may just give a little more than Gaff, but not much more.
Yes the bigger bodied guys are hard to find at AFL level, but there are players who come from second tier competitions who would fit the bill better than Varcoe.
Not sure that they would go within a mile of Mitch Robinson.

Varcoe wont come west anyway and id have him in the side over Josh Hill and Cripps any day of the week playing as a high half forward/half back with only an occasional run in the middle.
If he didnt cost much then getting a dual premiership player would have more upside than down, imo.

Someone will take Mitch Robinson on the cheap yep hes a gamble no doubt.

Simpson and Co will be searching high and low for that big bodied mid, picking up other players in the draft wont compromise that.

Varcoe is useful, though he has played his best footy

I think you're dead right there unk. He may be a good pick for a top up or a developing team. As someone said, (yolo?) he's a good player in a good side, but might not be in an average side. Anyway, why would a 27yr old family man pick up and move to the other side of the country?
Listening to the Nisbett interview on 91.3 this arvo, the Eagles are either playing their cards vey close to the chest, or simply have no big on ballers interested in moving over here - a WA curse so it seems.

So Griffen wants out of the Bulldogs but has named GWS as his team of choice. He is exactly the player that WCE need. I hope they realise this and try to entice him to come over to the west.

Exactly right. He would be the perfect addition to WC, just got to get him interested and that seems to be the problem getting the E.S. guys to come over.

It's all been very hohum from a WA point of view - nothing going. If players won't move over here, perhaps the AFL could give WCE & FFC all of WA as a recruiting zone :side:
