Vey interesting to listen to Kevin Bartlett on the couch last night. He asked why do we need an interchange. Perhaps he has a very good point.

Having just watched the 1988 state of origin between WA and Vic I'm not surprised more goals were kicked in the eighties, some of the softest frees you would ever see, not only that people are kidding themselves if they think the game was tougher and harder in those days.

Don't think anyone has said anything about being soft, more that as a spectacle the game has suffered tremendously.

Toughness not the issue.
It's the entertainment in question.
Can't deny those state games were not entertaining or free flowing.
Players today are tough no doubt.
Sam Mitchell, Joel Selwood say no more.

I would be keen to see the effect of no interchange.
Although it may shorten some careers.

I really believe it would lengthen careers as the mids and followers that get tagged wouldn't leave the field but rest in a pocket or whatever like they used to and it would be up to the tagger to stay with him all day, no resting on the bench. Would get back to talent. It would also slow the game down a bit as the players must stay on the field. At present they go flat out and have a short rest several times through the day. Would be more man on man contests rather than basketball type keep it off.

Once again all low scoring, seagulls chasing a chip, bottled up, 36 players all at one end type of footy again this round. Listening to talk back radio yesterday, people are questioning what entertainment value they are getting. I feel it's getting worse. All games had perfect weather.

At the MCG it was terrible. Second half both teams kicked just 3 goals. The SCG first half was lamentable. Just 5 goals to 2. The game at Subi last night was just ping pong. Everyone following the ball, and when teams streamed forward there was double backing because when they looked up, nobody was up forward. They were all still behind the ball. It is ugly to watch. If the AFL make all teams by law keep 3 or 4 inside the forward half, then maybe we lose that terrible flooding, AND we will see players attack because they will always know there are FORWARDS (remember them) waiting there to do an actual job.
And that's is bloody score !!!

Agree its getting like soccer, 18 from each team around the ball, then win it run, opppssss gotta stop now, and WAIT cos no-one is forward of the ball. Cross between rugby basketball british bulldog and soccer... NOT a good look.

While I agree that they have furked the game we once called AUSSIE RULES, I thought last night's PA/WCE games was an absolute classic. It was hard, tough contested footy. Not a lot of real highlights, but a good game to watch.
