Seems they want it up and running by 2019. 12 of the AFL teams already have stand alone ressies and the other 6 have state league affiliates (slaves). Apparently Port Maggies have already stated they would consider leaving the SANFL to join the new reserves comp, they are one of if not the oldest state league clubs in the land so their history will end there and then.

Will be interesting to see how WCE get out of the recently resigned agreement with EP who could not exit it as they went past the due by date but I'm sure WCE will just bully and bulldoze their way out of it with the WAFC's help and there will be no compensation for a breach of contract. As an idea, it sounds like a great thing for the WAFL, )Grassy will be doing handstands and high fives at the moment) EP will get their club back whether Bronte wants it or not, Peel will obviously hand in their WAFL license and officially become what they have always been, Freo's reserves. In their case they wont suck many if any local players into the new team as they already have them and they can initially draw on their colts, who will also dissappear, the WAFL will return to an 8 team comp. The Eagles are another story and could have a big impact on other WAFL teams as I expect they will need 20 plus players to make up their list.

The WAFL, SANFL, VFL, TFL and NEAFL will become the 3rd tier comps below the AFL ressies who will cherry pick local players at will as the local leagues wont be able to compete with the dollars. The meagre media we currently get will disappear in favour of coverage of the AFL ressies, Sponsors will be drawn to the 2nd tier comp as it will get far more media than the state leagues.

Is this the real death knell for the historic state leagues?

Pretty good summation SS. It'll mean the AFL clubs would have to have around 60 players on their books to service a reserves side as well as the seniors and we all know where those extra players will have to come from....although I'm not sure how it would work given the extras wouldn't be on full time contracts surely. So would they have to take time off work to say piss off to Melbourne for a Friday night game? It'll be interesting to see how it comes together if at all. For mine, I'd love to see Freo and WCE out of the WAFL as long as the funding model to WAFL clubs doesn't get stuffed around with by the WAFC to offset the additional cost of running a dedicated reserves team.

Spot on everyone. This is the beginning of the end. Next thing will be a stand alone U18 comp.

They might let the AFL clubs have a bigger list to make up the numbers in the reserves teams, mainly rookies I would presume, only problem with all this is they would cut the funding to the WAFL clubs and that would be the end of our competition as it stands.

Happy days

People here wanting the Dockers and Eagles out may just be bringing upon a death wish. The AFL will not be funding all the costs for flying the two teams, league and ressies all over Australia. Maybe the two WA sides will withdraw all funding to the WAFC , which means that the WAFL will get nothing.
Be careful of what you wish for.

You are at least 2% aware that WAFC owns the licences of the two parasites aren't you ??? Just how do you think your beloved AFL rubbish could decide to stop paying their royalty levy legally ???

I realise it's early days and this idea is only being considered
Can't see why Wafl funding would be an issue with a NRL? The national comp is swimming in money with over 2 million being spent on tv telecast rights. Not sure of radio broadcast deal costings. Many players are being paid very high salaries etcetera. Plenty of money is readily available for advertisiing and so forth. Many officials, coaches are all highly paid and so on. Then there's plenty of money, time and effort setting up the women's competition. We've got plenty of money to build a new sporting facility in Perth, now that Subiaco Oval is no longer used.
Continued funding for the Wafl should not be an issue. And should be assured.
However having said that, some-one somewhere will turn it into an issue for whatever reason :( .
Next thing we'll hear there's no funding available for the Wafl because of the NRL! The same thing will happen with the SANFL, because they are in a similar boat.
Then serious questions need asking of the continued relevance of the so called football commission?
The 7 Wafl clubs need to be going over the details of this plan very carefully.
Have said it previously, a chance there may not be a Wafl soon? Or a SANFL for that matter.
I hope I'm wrong!
