Apparently it's an unwritten law/gentlmans agreement, when a side is getting thumped in the dying moments/seconds you don't keep scoring. That said, from what I saw the Adelaide players were still trying to get the ball off the Wildcats. The Wildcats decided that given the close state of the comp they would keep scoring to ensure they get a home court final.

its generally accepted in basketball anchor that if you're a long way in front you run the clock down if there's only seconds left. if it's close then obviously it's on for young and old but when you're 24 points up like the Cats were..it's an unwritten rule you don't make a play.

Excuse me for the silly question, but I'm not into basket ball ladder details. Can anyone tell me why they would stop trying to score when there's percentage involved? Surely if you need a boost to it, you would keep going till the very end?

I certainly don't have much interest in basketball but I imagine it is similar to the situation in tennis where a player's shot hits the net, goes over and that player wins the point. It is an accepted convention that the player tends to apologise to the other player. Similarly, if they win a point through a mis-hit. It is a remnant of past times where winning wasn't always the be all and end all.

Not sure that is really similar Swan. Yes they both seem to be an etiquette thing, but its not as if the tennis match is 2 sets to love and 5 games love in the third (pretty much game over), either tennis player is not going to just let the other serve it out without returning fire.

You don't see the same happening in the AFL. Yes you see the team drain the clock at the end sometimes. But this is more of a strategy to win, not a strategy to be nice. When Geelong beat Melb by 150+, did they take their foot off in the last 10 mintues....no. Sport should always be played until the final whistle. Think that is the Australian way....correct me if I am wrong but I believe it was an American import who started the scuffle?
