There is a great article on the ABC website which goes into details on how using copper for the last mile is actually gonna cost us more than if they keep going with the labour plan to install fibre to the home

I'm rather perplexed by it all. One has to ask the question of, why oh why have the new you beaut fibre optic when the last little bit is joined to copper wire. It will make the whole network not as good. Perhaps the phone company will lose too much money on it? Sounds weird to me how it's now being done.

This was the actual article I read first.

www.abc.net.au/technology/articles/2013/09/19/3851924.htm

Essentially we have a government now who don't have the vision to see how FTTH will actually improve this country. I'm a big believer in do it once and do it right. When the FTTN is implemented its going to be someone elses problem to replace the copper last mile down the track and I can assure you Telstra won't be doing it.

I agree Fish, 'do it once and do it right'.
However since Samsung have come out saying 5G wireless will be consumer available by around 2020 and is a few times faster than our whenever to be finished NBN, the government responsible for dreaming up such an expensive project that will be outdated a couple of years after it is completed should have their heads checked. I couldn't care less what happens with the NBN, it is a moronic joke.

Please do some research before you state wireless as the saviour to all our problems because its not. Wifi has issues with saturation so the more people connecting to it the slower everyone's internet goes.

More so each mobile tower supporting this standard and any mobile tower currently supporting 3G/4G requires connection to the network which will be currently and going forward running fibre cables. Be that with Optus/Telstra/Vodafone

And wireless is not as reliable as some people think. When the weather is fine, the wireless works well. In the inclement weather, foggy conditions, heavy rain or lightning, the wireless signal quite often falls off the perch which can be frustrating.

So logically extrapolating on your reason for waiting perhaps we should wait until say 2040 to see how good the technology is them. Once again we have a Conservative Government has tunnel vision which stops in the 1950s. Abbott was superb in being the naysayer; not that he has to actually do something we have backflips and broken promises littering the path.

Will he stop the boats? Will he buy the boats? No his and Morrison's response is to gag the mdedia and prevent them from doing their job and reporting boat arrivals.

The same applies to the NBN. The same will apply to the reduction in CO2 emissions. Perhaps his most honest comment was when he said that Barnett could teach him a few things and it looks like he has learned the art of reneging on promises Barnett style.

I'm not sure what is wrong with connection I have now...
Are we so technilogically needy or nerdy that we need these super speeds... at a super price...
For what requirement exactly do you find it feasbile to blow so much when in the not too distance future a faster download will become possible..
All of Europe use wireless.
If it is cloudy put on your patience underwear and wait a minute or two.

It quite spurious to think waiting 6 or 7 years is the same as waiting a generation - '2040'. A bit of child act of exaggeration. I'm not sure comparing the 1950's, 60 odd years ago, to waiting a few years for a cheaper & better technology is accurate.
In fact it is absurd.
