I must of attended literally hundreds of Breaks as we called them back then (Break and Enters) now Burglaries, during my time in the cops, South of the River, around the City and Regional WA as well, back then we attended every single house or business, I'm not sure if they do that anymore, it was certainly rife in the early 90s.
It was very rare indeed back then to get a night break on a house, rarer indeed to have an offender on premises, yours actually sounds more like a Home Invasion type of offence. Generally the offenders would enter empty houses during the day, shops got hit at night. Violence was very rare,
It's good that you had the police arrive so quick, you would of certainly have been given a priority with an offender like that. My more recent experiences have been poor with attendance times.
30 years ago, home security like your set up was rare, in harder hit areas, people had security screens, but that was about it, wealthier areas you would find a few alarms on houses fitted but not that many, Video surveillance was virtually unknown, except for the very rich.
Alarms back then were basically useless, they would go off once the offender got inside, sound off and usually un monitored by the time anyone got there the offenders had cleaned the place out and done the bolt.
I always recommended a decent sized dog with a pretty aggro attitude to keep offenders out, I very rarely came across a house with a angry dog that was broken into.
In your case if you are really concerned I would recommend a good alarm system with duress alarm close at hand monitored by a reputable security company that can give you good response times. Keep 000 on speed dial as there is no substitute for urgent police attention.
Get in contact with your local police station and see what the Officer in Charge can offer you in terms of updates, and see if he can step up patrols. If you have no satisfaction write to the District Superintendent. Put it in writing as they will be obliged to respond and have KPIs.
