I was asked to post the free kick statistics. See below the statistics, quarter by quarter, of the free kicks paid in the league match yesterday broken up into those awarded in the back line (BL), centre line (CL) and forward line (FL).

1st Quarter

Claremont Swan Districts

FL: 3 to 0
CL: 2 to 0
BL: 0 to 2

2nd Quarter

Claremont Swan Districts

FL: 6 to 0
CL: 1 to 0
BL: 2 to 2

3rd Quarter

Claremont Swan Districts

FL: 2 to 0
CL: 1 to 0
BL: 0 to 2

4th Quarter

Claremont Swan Districts

FL: 1 to 1
CL: 0 to 0
BL: 0 to 4

Additionally, Claremont receive a 50 metre penalty to virtually the goal line in the first quarter.

Swans only free kick in the forward line for the ENTIRE MATCH was awarded beyond the 29 minute mark of the last quarter 51 metres out.

That is terrible. I hate it when I see free kicks get evened up in the last quarter and as you indicate frees in the forward line much more important tha\n frees in the back
Victorians still laugh at West Aussies because of the way we bailed out the vfl and then allowed it to be called it the AFL!

42 they are very interesting stats but hardly surprising to the Black & White supporters. I overheard 2 commentators remark to Swans officials off air that Swans were getting a 'rough deal' with the umpires and yet I also overheard an Umpires official remark they were doing a 'good job' both at half time. But as I continually post when you have the same bloke running the show for around 15 years on good money and the standards continue to go backwards at alarming speed it is no great surprise in fact you go to the footy knowing full well what we are up against even before taking into account the opposition players!

BH,

I agree you blokes received a raw deal yesterday but your tackling was woeful and contributed to a fair chunk of those frees against. I reckon the reason your on the wrong side of the free kick count is the inexperience in your side, craftier more experienced players such as Scloith, Hams, Bradshaw, Neates, O,Brien and company are seeing your boys as easy pickings!!!

Leedy could you please provide your analysis of the following points:

(i) why did we get 5 frees for to 1 against in the last quarter?
(ii) why did Claremont have more free kicks awarded to them in the forward line than we had total number of free kicks for the match?
(iii) was there only one infringement by a Claremont player in our forward line for the entire match and that occurred in the 30th minute of the last quarter?

Inside50 CL 68 - SD 30 and as WAG stated only 9.8% of our possession I50 might be a good indicator as to why we received few free kicks up forward. Ball was up the other end a lot

Spot on DW. I wasn't at the game so I can't comment on the justification of free kicks that were given or not given but it is logical that if the ball is in one area of the ground for 70% of the game then it is probable that most of the free kicks are going to be given in that area. A better analysis would be in a game where the inside 50's were more even.

As Swans supporters I think we should be more focussed on how this team can become more competitive in the 2nd half of the season rather than what the umpires are doing because this has zero relevance to where Swans are at this moment.

With respect to DW and mikeh, of course if the ball is up one end much more than the other end one would expect an imbalance in the free kicks. However, and it is a very big however, using your analysis how do you explain the fact that Claremont received a total of ONE free kick in the last quarter and scored 6 goals 3 in that quarter? I will also point out that the free kick count for the first half was 14-4 with a score of 10.6 to 3.1 and in the second half was 4-7 with a score of 10.4 to 4.7 (Claremont - Swans). There were several obvious free kicks not paid to Claremont in the last quarter. We received ONE free kick in the forward line in the 30th minute of the last quarter 51 metres from goal.

Of course, Swans' supporters should not be happy with how our team is going this season. That does not preclude a discussion on the above topic.

42,

I feel your frustration but I have nil interest let alone time to delve into where you don't and do get your kicks. All I know from watching on CH7 is that your young fellas were being as aggressive as possible but got sucked into head high stuff. A ripper example was Neates effort where he turned on the whiplash academy awards:)

42... it appears by your own admission that the free kick count had little or no effect on the score if Claremont kicked 10.6 in the first half after receiving 14 frees but still went on the kick 10.4 in the second with only 4 frees. this is further supported by the fact they scored 6.3 in the last with only one free....so what's your point?
