Coached Armadale to a Grand Final in 1961 in the South Suburban Murray FL. They went down by 10 goals, but Wilson went out swinging getting reported more than half a dozen times for striking. At the tribunal a few nights later, the list of reports were read out. The tribunal chairman said " This is quiet a list Mr Onions. What do you have to say for yourself?" Wilson replied " Its not true your honour. I only hit half the b***rds listed in the reports"

Very sad to hear of the passing of Wilson Onions whose commitment to the EFFC for many years as a player and as head of the past players must be acknowledged.

Wilson Onions was a member of the 1957 premiership team - a flag described by Jack Lee as probably the toughest the club has won as a 53 point 3/4 time deficit was overturned against Perth the week prior to a hard fought win in the GF against the Royals.

The same author described Wilson Onions as one of the most engaging bad boys the game has known in W.A - mainly because he was always so unaware of having done anything wrong.

Before my time, but reading his work for the club, his presence around the club since his playing days and his genuine love for the EFFC, truly a sad day not only for the family, the EFFC but the WAFL as a whole.....would of loved seeing the fella play, sounded like real character who wore his heart on his sleeve and in some reports on other parts of his anatomy.

RIP Wilson. One of the great East Freo players and clubman. Tough bugger in his day! Play on Wilson!

For those of us too young to remember him, can you give a relative similar comparison of someone playing from say 1980 until now?

Sorry SD, I don’t remember too much about him - I was pretty young. I do remember my old man, who was a Perth supporter say during an EF v Perth game “that basket’s going to flatten our whole team”. Despite Dad’s alliegance to PFC, he respected Wilson as a hard nut and good player on the field.
I have to agree with freeze about the Solin boys.

Sounds like a player you were glad was on your side if you played with him or supported Old Easts
