Big Arnie Paul Arnold played a bit at CHF when he first came in - I recall an article where Cable intimated Archie Duda was too slow which I suppose showed a gradual fall in & out of the league side
The thing about Archie is that he very rarely missed a set shot at goal and had a very deliberate technique routine

I think Tierney was retired before 1975.I remember he kicked about 13 points against Claremont and no goals at perth oval against Claremont.claremont won and I think the score was 19 goals 10 points to east perth 10 goals 28 points.I think he played half forward in the 72 grand final which was a reward for enduring a few gf loses.

Good memory Chaddy, i have him down for 0.10 against Claremont in round 2, 1966

It is interestting in regards the history of full-forwards at EP. Cable, as you know, actually got rid of Duda to bring in Paul Arnold. Claremont, for their part, had a bloke called Peter Avery whom ckicked ten goals a week in their reserves, but never got a regular game owing to the presence of Ralph.
Duda played five games with Subiaco and six with the PFC in 1980.

I remember Peter Avery was kicking plenty of goals at FF for Claremont Reserves but had Ralph (and then Alan Rowe) in his path, then he headed to Perth and couldnt crack it there where Mick Stinger Rea had the Full Forward position so eventually headed to WP where he finally cracked a League game..was there leading goalkicker one year there too maybe 1983?
I thought Crutchfield was from Vic AR?
But you can add the likes of Cocker, Hawkins, Western, Campbell, Quick, Higgins to your above list who switched from EP to SU although a few went the reverse way as well the likes of Dawson, Warner, G.Kelly, Hooper, Cullen?, Slade & Mundy to even it out a touch whilst Spencer went around & around in circles much like his former club does now!

BH: good one, that makes me feel a little less guilty about all our recruitting, as you know, Warner, the great Greg Kelly and Dawson all had a bit of ability. Mick C was from Vic land, played four games for the Royals? Spencer should have stayed with the Lions in 1986, anything could have happened in terms of injuries and he would have played in his third premeirship side.

Here is question for you BH, if you would not mind giving your view. On paper, at least, did EP have better key forwards than SD in the early 1980s? One cannot question the credentials of the captain or SB at Swans, but looking back, the real class of your beloved black and whites was across the centre, the ruck and the half-forward line, Mike Richardson and Don Homes being just two of many.

AR no doubt our midfield was our strength back then with a centre line of- P.Narkle, Baker, K.Narkle Toddy could sleep a little easier on a Friday night knowing we had at least 90 possessions from that line alone then throw in other midfielders like- Shine, Neesham, Melrose, Richardson, Blackaby, Langsford, Smith, Brenton, Williams et al.
Rucks of Boucher, Sidebottom, Sartori, Johns, Hoyer were strong but needed to be in that era going up against the likes of Moss, Harper, Michael, Shaw, Ironmongrel, Edwards, Duke, Jager, Ellen, Keene, Scott, Simms, Baynes, Turner, Purser, Harding & Alexander.
Our backs were another strength probably under rated by others but the likes of Rance, Mullooly, Solin, Fogarty, Ware, Skwirowski, Holden, Fitzgerald, Kenny, Cransberg et al always did the job especially in the big games.
Our key forwards of Beasley (Australian record holder for most goals kicked in the 1980s), Nowotny, Hutton, Sidebottom, Caton, Marshall et al with the versatility of Rance, Fitzgerald, Kenny, Sartori to fill in were more than capable 3 of which were Bernie Naylor Medallists but having small goalsneaks like Holmes, Richardson, Blackaby, Williams to mop up the crumbs was certainly good back up mate.

BH: I agree with all of that. Sidebottom is the one I always forget about at SD, unsure why as he was a great footballer, whom as you would remember is in that famous state-of origin picture with his little SD mate, Kevin Taylor. You were lucky to have two players of the ilk of Kenny and Hutton, both far from big, but as you said, always played with great skill.

Sidey & Squizzy were a damaging duo on their day AR both for SD & WA. From memory they kicked 15 goals between themselves in the 1985 1st Semi vs WP.
