Geoff Clark (33 games 1975-78) I believe was another gtr?

Loved cattogio during some dark years...other fave recruits were Crutchfield< Peter Munro and Stephen Sells. We even had David Parkin for a year.

gtr: thanks, yep, I agree. From doing some readding I would say that talent flooded out of the club in 1974, forcing them to resort to recruitting on mass. Threre appears to have been a strong connexion between Daryl Foster at UWA and the club --- Foster was reserves coach in the mid 1970s --- partlly explainning the arrival of players, such as, Smith, Parkin and so on. I would also add that Subiaco had a thing for captain coaches in the era from 1956-1979. In part, I would note that this helped feed the recritment of Victorians, especially if the club believed there were no local candidates whom could be a credible captain coach in league football.

The captain coaches included:

Charlie Tyson SF
Dave Cuzen Richmond
Keith Slater SD
Haydn Bunton 1968-1970
Ross Smith
David Parkin
Brian Douge

cheers.

BH: Mcdonald was from Victoria, he later moved back --- 1981 --- and played in the VFA. I am unsure what happened to Phil Dobson, especially as his replacement of Douge did cause a minor controversy at the time. Your right BH, Douge certainlly gave the club great service. From memory, he tried to make a comeback under Bunton, but as he worked for the WAFL, decided against --- rightlly --- out of fairness to the other clubs.

DG -- thanks for the extra information on Munro in 1981 -- he was a good forward in 1980, a good mark for a man his size. I checked out the Old Easts game you mentioned, and true enough, he did kick 1.1. He also had a good game against WP in round 15, kicking 3.2, in a game we actually won. I think it was the only match that he kicked more than a goal in to be honest.

What happened in the last quarter against EF? We were in front at three-quarter time.

jjim: thanks for the post on Styles, as you can imagine, I had never heard of him. I looked him up, and the frightening thing was as you would remember, he was suppose to be a straight swap for Fitzpatrick in the ruck position. Oh well.

Stewie Magee was the last playing coach at Swans to my knowledge. He coached one season in 1976 and started off OK with a record of 4 wins and 3 losses after 7 games. However the wheels fell off after this with only 3 wins from the remaining 14 matches. It was clear that he had very little in the way of a defensive plan as Swans leaked an average 130 points per game to the opposition and after this season the club decided to rebuild with young players with John Todd at the helm rather than continuing to be a mid table team that won 6 - 8 games per season. That decision was the genesis of the dominant period of the early 80's.

We were never going to win that game Ark, lucky they didn't kick straight! It was good to get fairly close though, also to kick a decent score, as both were rare in 1980. Jeez that was a terrible year

DG: I know what you mean. Between 1975-1983 I reckon we played 168 games and scorred 20 goals in only 10 games --- nearlly half of which came in 1981 alone.

Vinnie was all class, could hand out the best bit of foot candy I've seen. Crutchy was a very good fullback, hard as nails and Sells was one of the classiest HF flankers the club has seen. Parkin was here for a year to finish his phys ed degree, the same was the case for Ross Smith and Douge but he stayed a bit longer. Parkin was a straight shooter and said on his departure that Subiaco at the time was one of the worst run clubs he had experienced, he was oh so on the mark as the club decended into the financial mire until Merrifield arrived to save the club and set up an enduringly successful structure and culture which saw the club debt free by the time the Eagles came alomg.
