Back on the 86 Subi team, I think Dwayne lamb was perhaps their most important player. Strong in the tackle and fast. Bunton playing him on the half forward flank was a matter stroke. Sells was also very important. very creative. Very energetic. Good competitor. And Phil lamb marked superbly and was quite quick. marks in defence are worth their weight in gold. Zannoti also created a lot of scoring opportunities from his dash.

I could go on. Just grateful a childhood of unrelenting losses was redressed in the last ever pure wafl game. Should have beaten Hawthorn two weeks later.

johnny: good post, keep them coming. We should have beaten Hawthorn the following week, as you suggested. Hawthorn showed its professionalism by closing the game up in the second half and clinging to the lead. Either way, some of the Victorians rate that hawthorn side as one of the best ever seen in the state and we went with them. Whatever the reasons for the changes which took place at the end of 1986, the standard of the WAFL was strong.

ArkRoyal wrote: DG- good question -- I would always go with the 1995 team, some great players in the team, although many were ageing as we know. Even more importantly, it played against more than capable opposition, symbolised by WP in the grand final. In many games, we only won by the odd goal, so they were genuinely deserved wins.

I am grateful to the 21 century team for winning our first ever hat trick of premierships, however, it was in an era where, peel and fremantle weakened the competition, as did the after affects of the alignments, and the fact that, many of the other clubs had no money. In the end, South put together a pretty solid team to beat us from memory, which was to their credit; the loss to South also demonstrates, to get back to the direct comparison between 1995 and the 21 century team, that, against good opposition, we struggled a bit.

Thanks Ark, I tend to agree with you, although the following year in 96 we couldn't beat eggs! Up there in the top 4 worse seasons since I have been watching. We had a young inexperienced side at some stages and copped big floggings accordingly. We did win a few but it was up there with 80, 79 and 76...

That was a big strong hawks team not sure how we would've gone if there was a rematch in melbourne

I was at that game DG, barracking for Subi. :woohoo:

Perth played North Melbourne at Lathlain pre season 78 I think. Was also a ripper of a game, think North hung on by a goal.

Not to play things down too much as it was a great effort by the Lions, but need to remember it was the week after the VFL GF and the Hawks boys were probably still in celebration mode and were lead by their assistant coach not the great Allan Jeans, Subi had 2 weeks to prepare and Bunts was placing huge significance on the game, he mentioned it several times in his GF post match speech in the social rooms.

Dwayne Lamb did very well considering he had only one side....Never realised or remembered how classy that Micheal Mort was too....watching the 85 GF, the guy was very silky indeed....as was Sells....but then Sells school boy miss running into an open goal, cost you guys back to back flags....

That 86 state of origin game I know I was on the outer wing as I always was in those state games. Watching it the other night when the commentators said there’s a bit of biffo on behind the play you see the ball go over the boundary on the wing and Tom Alvin was there for the throw in and I remember this bloke near me yelling out “Get a hair cut you tart” which got a bit of a laugh. Was trying to see myself out there but not still enough or close enough. I would of been about 23 at the time.
