Pre the 1960s Ted Holdsworth was not only our best key forward but could nearly lay claim to our best player with the likes of Krepp, Anderson, Pearce etc up until the arrival of the likes of Walker, Slater, Bunton, Bagley, Castledine, Nesbit, Brown, Lawson, Gray, Turnbull et al in the late 50s early 60s era!

AR the late Paul Werner came to SD from Manuka (ACT) Ed Blackaby's old club for 1 season in 1983 (14 games, 41 goals) but was not selected for the GF after playing in the Preliminary Final thumping of SF and Stan Nowotny was chosen instead for his final WAFL game.

BH -- sad that Werner has passed away -- he would have been handy at Subi around that time.
Holdsworth must have been a bloody good player, perhaps comparable to Ted Tyson from WP?

Did not he get picked in the best ever side ahead of Beasely?

Holdsworth was outstanding. First to 100 goals for the 1937 season - round 15 - but injury meant he played little later in the season and three others passed him (five kicked 100 or more that season). He became an accomplished fullback after the war.

Are you sure about that BC.We did poach Mick Johns pretty sure Marshall walked out of Subi.Like other players around that time Alex Hamilton ,Neil Randall.John Dimmer.
