from the back line:

Dennis Blair Lou Daily Neil Balme

Johnnie Bowe Brighton Diggins Bill Faull

Tim Gepp Peter Featherby Warren Dean

Georgiadies Geoff Ironmonger Gary Buckenara

George Young Austin R Dave Cuzens

Mike Fitzpatrick the great Johnny Leonard Andy MacNish

Mark Zanotti Ian Dargie.

Good side too; naturally it would not beat EP's side most of the time
Just think, without all those Subi players in the 1930s, SM would not have had a history at all.

I would have thought a Tassie Medalist and All-Oz CHB might have been able to sneak into that team. :)

Thanks 'Beas' I was unaware of the brothers, as my Grand dad never mentioned them. They were, it seems, looking at their records for Geelong, just another example of WA players going to Victoria and helping another club up the VFL's ladder. I am absolutely certain they would have played with two others, Lou Daily and the great George Moloney.

Player Achievements and Rankings Criteria

50 games 100 games 150 games plus F&B Coach Captain Leading Goal Kicker State Player Prem Side

Dennis Blair (1) Lou Daily (0) Neil Balme (5)

Johnnie Bowe (1) Brighton Diggins (7) Peter Eakins (0)

Peter Featherby (4) Bill Faul (5) Tim Gepp (2)

John Georgiadies (0) Len Wetherel (6) Gary Buckenara (8)

George Young (6) Austin Robertson (1) Dave Cuzens (4)

Mike Fitzpatrick (10) Johnny Leonard (2) Andy MacNish (0)

Mark Zanotti (2) Ian Dargie (0)

The grand total comes to 64-- I hope -- Feel free to check lads.

This is an attempt to give us some idea how sucessful the Subi players were when playing in the AFL . I have simply ranked each achivement with one point. By leading goal kicker I mean for their club or in the competition. For example, if you were ranking Beasley whom did both, of course, you would give him 2 points each year, one if it was just for Footscray. By state football I mean played for Victoria.

Example: Mike Fitzpatrick:

1 for 50 games
1 for 100 games
1 for 150 games
1 for being captain
1 for farest and best
3 for his three premierships
2 Victorian State Games.

Speaking of Warren Dean AR I see his son must have inherited his old man's superboot for kicking as he is off to a US College to take up a scholarship as a specialist punter over there.
I remember in about 1985 Warren Dean kicking a goal from near the Billy Walker Stand kicking towards the City end at Bassendean Oval that must have been around a 70m kick from goal!!

BH: I did not know that. Does he play grid iron or did they spot him as an Aussie Rules junior? Good luck to him. His Dad was just a natural kick. In general, blokes I grow up with, so younger then Warren Dean were good kicks of the ball. I don't know why coaches allow players to prosper whom can't kick the ball these days.

I think he would have had a longer career, Dean, if we had of kept him at CHB; having to make the play in the forward line meant that his body was smashed.

Was that the game where the Lions got up by less than a goal?

I think you ended up winning by about 3 or 4 goals in the end AR after it was tight at 3/4 time. That was the first time I had ever experienced a loss vs the Lions after following the Ducks as a young tacker from 1979....nowadays I can’t even remember our last win against them!

BH: it will happen -- just keep in mind the 1979 to 1984 time for SD. The Black and Whites were the only team we did not beat; not in 1980, when there was a bloody great storm which nearly swept away SD, or, not in 1981, when we kicked 8 goals in the first quarter and still lost, or latter in the year, when Buckenara played like a god and SD failled to kick straight -- we still lost by five points.
