Who was the key position player whom Subi tried to buy in 1980? He was soon to be a premeirship player that year.

Was it Joe McKay AR?

From memory Subiaco tried to recruit a number of players that pre season most of whom were let go half way through the year as Armstrong wielded a broom through the place when he took over from Burton early in the season.

BH -- beautifully done. If they had got him, Bease, they might have won three or four games instead of fluking two as they did. I bet you Joe was glad he stayed? I think they also tried to sign Ross Prunster for the back line, but, he chose the Demons instead.

Rob Bennett called their recruitting 'peripheral' if you dont mind. How was getting Murray a ruckman and Duda a full foward, both needed, 'peripheral recruitting?

Duda only lasted a couple of games before $ubi gave him his marching orders AR then was off to Perth for the rest of that season.
Some others K.A put the broom through were recruits- Mick Ray (ex P & EP), Lewington (ex SF), Levitzke (ex EP), Enzo Corvino (ex StK), Durnthaler (ex EF), Fee (went to Wanneroo), Hall (went to EP), Loxley (went to EP), Begg (went to SF), McDonald & Williams.
I think the likes of Randall (SF) & Dimmer (EP) had already left during the pre season long before Armstrong had came on board.

BH: there were others: Brian Cook and John Hall also went to EP after being bootted out; Colin Jackman; George Young (he retirrred)

The only two he got wrong in my humble opinion were:

Duda -- you needed him to play along side Munro, Marshall
Loxley -- he had talent, which he showed at EP -- I think he got sick of Dorrington and gave up football.

Did Corvino play leauge football in the VFL? We also recruitted Russell Forbes from that club in 1982 -- he never played one league game in a club which went basically winless. How is that for recruitting?

I don’t think Corvino played a League game at StK AR.
There were others in a similar boat to him Subiaco recruited from VFL around the same era that barely played League in the WAFL- Peter Bennett, Mark Alves, Shane Braddy, Brendan MacFaull, Greg Davis etc.
Some who fared better- Graeme Schultz, Peter Munro, Brian Dogue.

I’m pretty sure there was talk of Lauristson from south’s joining us, he would’ve been handy. Forbes was a champion sprinter pity he couldn’t play footy for shit. Meirs was a thug but handy. Peter Castles was another, big strong boy but fringe

Gordon Polson was used by Cometti as a half forward with reasonable results, he played most games including the 1st Semi and Prelim after transferring across 1/3rd into the 82 season. There was another fella who was a victim of the $ubi fall out that I am interested if the "Don" AKA BH can provide any further information on and that was Frank Buktenica. He played a few games for WP, I actually have a bit of footage of him, he looked like he had a shag pile rug strapped to his back it was that hairy :)
