Afternoon all. Just thought I would run a quick thread on the Mankad-- Yes or No? Apparently Mankad ran out Bill Brown twice in the same season.

Yes

I've always considered it to be a cowardly act of desperation by a bowler to attempt it - the Sarfraz Nawaz one in 1979 (I think from ancient memory???) was pretty poor really , but from coming from an idiot who eventually was discovered to be a ball tamperer I suppose it's only to be expected
A quick word to the standing umpire is all it takes to stop that caper

I believe that convention has it that a bowler should warn a batsman trying to gain some advantage. If he persists then ok to "Mankad" him.

Not a Mankad but did anyone see the incident where the Brisbane Heat batsman ( Ross) was given out obstructing the field in the BBL tonight? He was running through for a second run and dived for the crease He was hit by the throw from the outfield and the ball ricocheted onto the stumps. Becuase Ross deviated from his straight line of running, the 3rd umpire deemed that he had deliberately tried to prevent the ball from hitting the stumps. Fair to say that the two captains (McCullum and Bailey) had differing views and they had a long animated discussion at the end of the game.

If the non-striking batsman did it deliberately to gain an advantage even after being warned then yes.

Southerner, I recall it was Alan Hurst who "mankaded" Sikander Bakht in Pakistan's second innings at the WACA in 1979, with Sarfraz later successfully appealing for "handling the ball(s)" against the Hapless Hooker Andrew Hilditch.
This was also Victorian Jeff Moss's only Test - I think he hit the winning run and finished with a Test average of 60 (22 and 38 not out).

BC -- I tend to agree with you.

AD -- did Hilditch actually pick up the ball?

mikeh -- what is your opinion on the 'obstructting the field decision'.? I think the South Africans came close to asking for 'obstructing the field' during a ODI against Warne while he was batting. In the end, Cronje decided against making an appeal.

Something tonight in the BBL similar to Mankad.A very rair type of dismissal. The Heat batsman made his ground but was given out for obstruction.Ran off the wicket to the line of the stumps.
