Greatest in the world ROFL,,,,yeah like the US and French ones dont rate?

Personally , I have always prefered the tune of waltzing matilda set to the words of God Bless Australia, its something akin to God Defend NZ, which is also a great anthem, it was one of the choices in the ref, but lost out to Advance Oz, which Im OK with, bar the fact that not all verses are sung most of the time.

Bazza perhaps you might like to check out the actual 2nd verse of Advance Australia Fair. Should we throw in the South African anthem as well?

I know exactly what they are and that is why they should be included, which is the full song which was put to the vote at the ref and won the vote based on its content.

1961 God Bless Australia was written by an Ozzie, Advance Oz was written by a Scot.

A little bit of creative writing could amend the 2nd verse to make it more relevant to the current times.

Hows this:

"for those who come across the seas

We'll send them to Nauru

We put our heads into the sand

And say she'll be right, blue"

See below all the verses of Advance Australia Fair:

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"

When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
With all her faults we love her still,
"Brittannia rules the wave!"
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

While other nations of the globe
Behold us from afar,
We'll rise to high renown and shine
Like our glorious southern star;
From England, Scotia, Erin's Isle,
Who come our lot to share,
Let all combine with heart and hand
To advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Should foreign foe e'er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore
To guard our native strand;
Brittannia then shall surely know,
Beyond wide ocean's roll,
Her sons in fair Australia's land
Still keep a British soul.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Thanks Swan42 - Truly sums up the building blocks of what made our nation great.

Hand firmly on it - God Defend NZ is a ripper especially the Maori segment.

Changing the day will do nothing to alter history or the state of Aboriginal Welfare today, further it ignores totally the fact of the contribution of the first fleeters and convicts.

Did things get better for them on the 27Th? or the 1 March ?? no, every day was the same after the 26 of Jan as far as the Blackfellas are concerned.

I'm all for having a Aboriginal Day , BUT we have that don't we, Sorry Day a whole bloody week of NAIDOC , AFL NRL indigenous rounds , it goes on and on, made up welcome to country stuff...etc etc...

Great , but Im stuffed if my ancestors contribution is going to be painted out of the picture by getting rid of Oz Day...

The yanks have Thanksgiving for the arrival of the Pilgrims, and Columbus Day for Christopher Columbus , we should have OZ Day and return WA Day to FOUNDATION Day.

What happened on the 26th January, 1788 has no relevance for WA. It is as simple as that.

Last time i looked WA was part of AUSTRALIA, surely we can all celebrate as ONE on this day without petty differences??

It was not part of Australia on 26th January, 1788.

Funny that Australia didn't even exist in 1788.

Also can you please explain the 4th of July being a national day in the US, seeings that it only relates to the original few states that declared independence from Great Britain...how does that relate to say California which was part of Spanish Mexico at the time, and was invaded and conquered against its will to join the US? Florida which had the same experience, Hawaii which had its royal family booted and say Louisiana which was purchased from the French and had nothing to do with the 4th of July??? Also lets not forget the Native Americans, they seemed to put up a lot more of a fight than the Aboriginals and lost out - any word on change for them?

They seem to still be able to celebrate the day even if they never where part of the US at the time and joined by use of force.

swan42 wrote: Personally my choice for our anthem was Dorothea MacKellar's My Country.

BH La Marseillaise (not the Brisbane Lions' version) is very impressive.

Swan can you please explain how a poem with no musical setting at all can possibly be a national anthem?

Are you seriously saying that when we receive a gold medal at the Os a poem is read out?

As much as I love that poem, I cant see it working as an Anthem.
