Poor attendances at AFL ( bit over 37,000) & very low at WAFL with at total of 5000 at the 4 games.
What is wrong?

Yes indeed LS. The lowest attendance for a week 8 fixturing for 10 years!
I think we all know the Wafl's problems.
And that's not really the question, the question should be, how do we bring the Wafl back?

come on loads the weather was bloody awful, crowds have always been poor on such days

Back in 1980, we played SD when they were going for 12 straight wins to get hold of 20,000 dollars; the weather was diabolical, and, understandably, the crowd was less than 3,000.

I vaguely remember that game AR you blokes took it right up to us on our way to the $20k vs WP the next week, actually 6105 there that day despite appalling conditions.

For the record Swans played Subiaco on June 21, 1980 the score was SD 7.12 to Subiaco 5.13 with an attendance of 6,105.

Swans best attendance at Bassendean Oval in 1980 was 22,350 versus West Perth 10th May.

BH, Swan 42: thanks for the correction on the crowds -- that was a great effort by the SD faithful to attend in such numbers on such a shocking day. Full credit, as I said, to all those whom turned up last week too.

SD did a good job to turn that game around Bease, especially as the side was not overly fond of wet weather, and, in circumstances where, I think to this day, the pressure of the winning sequence was wearring them down,

AR the quarter by quarter scores were:

SD: 0.0 4.4 5.6 7.12
S: 2.3 3.4 3.10 5.13

just for the historical record: on very wet days the bottom sides -- Pfc, EF and Subi -- attracted crowds as low as 3,000 particularly if they played each other towards the end of the season.

BH: from memory and readding through some of the lowish scores for the era, I think there was quite a bit of rain. I think it was welcomed at the time, as I remember growing up in drought years as a little kid. Is that how you re-call it Bease?
