At a complete loss, rated higher on "environment" , our climate leaves it for dead, they have not got a park anything close to Kings Park, the Yarra is like a sewer compared to the Swan, we have the best beaches on our door step . as for St Kilda Beach, you have to be kidding.

melbourne might out rank Perth on things like infrastructure Baz.They have Trams and the city loop.Stronger economy with a growing property market and a fair share of the GST.
Not sure how a city 3 times the size of Perth can be higher on environment. Perth is hot and windy in the summer.That almost killed the early settlement in Wa.One thng on Melbourne it's a lovely city but very dirty.Allways rubbish bins overfilled and rats running around everywhere.

Even more laughable than Melbourne with its dirty creek & non existent beaches out ranking us was Adelaide finishing higher

try walking around Perth CBD on a Sunday compared to Melbourne and then you'll understand why it rates higher.

It is just a survey - they just measure a few things and Melbourne surprise surprise is a head of old sleepy hollow. Perth is too hot and when did you last go to Kings Park or to the Beach?

I was at Kings Park Sunday Morning and the Beach Last weekend.

I can get the culture bit for now, we have a new WA Museum under construction that will help but we probably will never have the same level of Arts as Melbourne, but the Environment is beyond me, I cant think of a City with a worse Climate, maybe Hobart, but as far as Lay Out Open Spaces Parks River and Beaches go Melbourne is a joke.

and to be honest I have been in the Melbourne CBD on a Sunday and didn't think it was that great.

grotty filthy laneways covered in graffti with homelss dudes living in bins amid rats isn't really that attractive while its 9 deg tops grey skies with drizzle...paradise

You honestly cannot think of a City with a worse Climate? The new WA Museum under construction is the old museum which leaves Perth with currently no museum. So Perth gets one museum do you really think that will put it ahead culturally? Also Melbourne is known for its picturesque parks and gardens and is regarded as Australia's garden city. The Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne are regarded as one of the finest landscaped gardens in the world. Carlton Gardens and the Royal Exhibition Buildings are included in the World Heritage list. Sorry but the Kings Domain, Fitzroy Gardens, The Shrine of Remembrance, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, The Queen Victoria Gardens, The Victoria State Rose Garden, Footscray Park, St Kilda Botanical Gardens, the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne, the National Rhododendron Gardens (and that is not naming all) put Melbourne ahead when it comes to open spaces and parks.

They are all postage stamps compared to Kings Park AND all the Native Species are Devoid, you might as well be walking around pommie land, none of them are a patch on Kings Park especially view wise.

Kings Park is the largest inner city park in the WORLD even bigger than Central Park in NYC, and that is before you get to the hundreds of unique native species it has, that alone craps on anything Melbourne has, a few roses and oak tress you can see in London done better.
