A big loss he meant so much to most of us growing up in the 70's and 80's with The Winners and he was the voice of football for me. Fittingly left us watching the game he loved. RIP Drew Morphett.

Got his start here in WA , calling WAFL games along side the legendary George Grljusich.

Its in Georges book where he says he educated Drew on calling Aussie Rules as he was a rugby league man. So its in the WAFL where he cut his teeth

He moved to Perth, in 66, was from NSW, had never seen a Australian Rules game, Abc Perth trained him up, started doing around the grounds, he reckons it looked like ants on an anthill to start with but soon picked it up, ended up one of the best and moved to Victoria to call Vfl for Abc, around 77, and host The Winners , which was shown Saturday night in Melbourne, he also was the producer of the show, which meant he had to drive the tapes out to the airport which were flown across to Perth for it to be shown here Sunday evening, he ran that for 10 years, Tim Lane took over the show in its last year or two , pretty sure it ended 87. Drew moved to ch 7 for many years and then back to Abc , until the cuts and he was a big name laid off, he ended up on 3aw and 6pr and did the Eagles v Giants just last week and was supposed to be doing Dockers v Essendon today...sad loss.

Yeah he had a trip to Europe planned after today as no more eagles or dockers games and wasnt doing finals, probably would of been his last call ever today but who knows.

Hey was only 17 when he scored a cadetship straight from school at Abc Sydney, he was packed up and sent to Perth as one of the crew here had retired.
There is an excellent interview on you tube that was his farewell on Abc conducted at Scg at his last ever day at Abc. Talks about his whole career and seeing Cable and Farmer in Perth for first time, he said he had never heard of them in Sydney and only knew Rugby League , and then went onto say he was now 100 Afl bloke and hadnt followed Rugby for years.

Not sure thats correct about Drew not following Rugby league for years as Hardie said just on the weekend that Cameron Smith of the Melbourne Storm was on the plane earlier this year and he went over for a selfie with him and told him what a legend he is so he obviously still kept track of it
